Six Funky Ideas for Short Hair Color

Rochelle Connery
If you're picking short hair color, you can go a little more wild than you can -- or should -- with long hair. With short hair, you can get away with mixing bright color and vibrant highlights without really overdoing it the way you would on long locks.

Burnt colors: Red and orange tints look fantastic in razor-edged cuts with lots of short layers. Hayley Williams of Paramore has popularized this color probably more than any other celebrity, so if your goal is to look like a punk rocker, this would make for a great short hair color choice.

Chunky colors: Don't settle for just one color when you can have two or three. Short-haired women often opt for bangs that are a different color than the rest of their hair. For instance, some color the back of their hair jet black and opt for purple bangs in front.

Platinum blonde: Celebrities love going platinum blonde, especially ones like Mary J. Blige and Victoria Beckham. Join their ranks with a short platinum cut of your own if you want their red carpet look.

Classic Hollywood: Emma Watson and Carrie Mulligan sport short hair color in dark chestnut colors with no highlights. If you want a classic look that's appropriate for work but still looks sporty, go for a rich brown hair color.

Seasonal colors: Give your hair the effect of a pumpkin or caramel apple with seasonal colors come autumn. To achieve this look, go for a warm blonde or light brown tone for your base. Follow up with copper, light blonde and caramel highlights for a gentle blend of three or four autumn colors.

Dipped tips: This probably isn't a look you want year-round, but for a funky look, get your short hair color in a plain color on the bottom, then have your stylist dye the bottom inch or two in rainbow colors. Or, you if you'd prefer a more gothic or emo look, go for black on the bottom and tip them in bright red to look like blood.
