Hot Teen Reads

Lynn Mason

Hot, drowsy afternoons of summer are the perfect time to escape with a good book. Whether you enjoy a good mystery, humor, drama or inspiring true stories this list of summer reads will appeal to any teen (or adult!) looking for a good book. These six young-adult books for summer reading are perfect for teens to enjoy at the beach, waiting in line, or on lazy afternoons at home.

Carter Finally Gets It by Brent Crawford - This laugh-out-loud funny book is perfect for adolescent boys or any one who has ever been or known an adolescent boy. Awkward freshman Will Carter endures many life- threatening and humiliating situations before he finally gets it.

The Sky is Everywhere by Jandy Nelson - This is a beautifully written and touching young adult novel. 17-year old Lennie must come to terms with her sister's sudden death, mother's abandonment and awakening sexuality.

Wish You Were Dead by Todd Strasser - There is nothing like a good mystery to help while away the hours of a hot day. Madison is no old-fashioned Nancy Drew or typical unfortunate teen heroine; she is a popular and privileged teen who must discover who is stalking her online and killing her friends. This modern tale is thoroughly satisfying and fun.

Three Little Words - A Memoir by Ashley Rhoades-Courter - This triumphant true tale tells the author's story of growing up in a series of foster homes, suffering abuse and dealing with abandonment. Rhoades-Courier not only survives but finds the strength to succeed.

Ship Breaker by Paola Bacigaluoi -This gritty adventure is set in a brutal post-apocalypse world. Nailer and his friend, Pima, discover a shipwreck laden with treasure and trouble in the form of a half dead girl. This is a fast-paced and well-crafted thriller of a book.

Please Ignore Vera Dietz by A.S. King - Vera has been in love with her best friend and neighbor Charlie her whole life but things fall apart her junior year when he betrays her. Vera is used to keeping secrets but when Charlie dies will she finally tell the truth? This read is smart, funny and thoroughly engrossing.

The long, hot, dog-days of summer are a great time to read. These six young adult books are hot choices for summer reading.

I'm 50, but I still love "young-adult" and teen books. Thanks for the recommendations! My three sons are avid readers, always have been, and so are my four nieces. Lots of young people enjoy reading, and all of the ones I've mentioned love the classics, and other really good, deep books of literature.

With all due respect Vincent, I work at a high school and have two teens of my own. Maybe 'most' don't read more than neccesary but some will have book reports and every generation has its avid readers and many youth enjoy a good book. The books I pick I have read and been pleased with, many are award winners, and many have my teen daughter's 'stamp of approval' I think there is some terrific young adult literature out there!
