You know the old adage "happiness is contagious"? This came around because both moods and habits are like a disease - they're easily spread! When you are around positive people, you tend to become more positive. What if you are around people who have a strong dedication to losing weight? You guessed it: you will be infected by their motivation to lose weight. Try to meet people at your gym, or a local health food store, where you are likely to find health and weight-conscious individuals to help you along your weight loss journey. Try to workout with them, and while you build your friendship, you can build a new healthy circle of friends to enforce your new habits.
Make substitutes of your favorite foods
It's hard to give up certain foods, especially sweets and fatty foods. But, instead of cutting them out completely, try to find a healthier alternative that will fill your craving, but not derail your weight-loss. Search the internet for alternative recipes, or simply browse your grocery store for organic or low-fat options that will help you along in your weight-loss goals. You might even find that, after you cut out some of your unhealthy foods and win the addition over them, you actually love the taste of fresh fruit!
Carry a water bottle with you
Staying hydrated is so important to those trying to lose weight. Not only will it keep you healthy at the gym, it will also help you stay full between meals, so your weight-loss won't be sabotaged by the need to snack. By keeping a water bottle with you, you will always have something to drink on hand and can even keep track of how much water you're drinking in a day. If you set a goal to drink more water, you may find that much of your hunger from before was attributed to just being thirsty!
Track your progress
A great weight-loss habit to get into is keeping track of how well you are doing with your goals. If you are blindly trying to gauge how much progress you have done, you will soon burn out because you don't see results fast enough. Instead of trying to only keep track of the pounds you have lost, keep track of the miles you have run, or the hours you have worked out at the gym, or even the servings of vegetables you have eaten in the day. When changing your habits for better weight-loss, you will find even small things will be an accomplishment, and that will keep you motivated to stay on track. You can use a wall calendar or day planner to keep track of your accomplishments. This will let you back-track and see how far you've come since you started your weight loss journey. If you're really motivated by reward systems, even giving yourself a gold star sticker on a certain day you ate very well can keep you remembering your awesome work towards weight loss.
Make your workout fun
There is nothing worse than starting on a goal and then failing simply because it didn't interest you anymore. Don't let that happen with weight-loss! Staying interested in your workout will help you want to do it more. If you add music, a good friend, or just more variety, having fun while you're working out will make it seem like less of a chore, and will be more likely to stick with working out. A quick search will show you many suggestions to having a better workout. Personally, I like to use different machines every time I go to the gym, or if I am able to, run outside to keep my surroundings changing and myself more interested in my workout. Try to do something new every day to keep your weight loss journey successful.
Repeat your goal to yourself every morning
This is a very important habit to make and keep! Anyone who ever wakes up on the "wrong side of the bed" knows that the first thing you think of will likely carry you through the day, so make your first thought a good one. Keep a note on your beside table, or even set the background of your cell phone to a reminder of what you want to accomplish. If you want to lose 10 pounds, or look good in your old red dress for a reunion, remind yourself every morning. You will constantly think of this goal throughout the day, and it will shape your other weight loss goals. Stay positive about your accomplishments and what you want to accomplish in the future, and weight loss will be so much easier!
