Six players probably keeping your fantasy football team in last place

JM Van Horn
As the fantasy football season beings to wind down it is the perfect time for owners to see where their team failed. If you drafted one of these six players, the odds are that you will be spending your time preparing for fantasy baseball instead of a chance at a championship run.

# 5 - Matt Schaub (Houston Texans)

Success is driven in the NFL by the quarterback position and the same could be said of fantasy football owners. This is why they spend so much time trying to pick the right quarterback to lead their team. After his breakout season in 2009, many owners felt Schaub was that person this year. This turned into an average draft selection of 32.3 according to Yahoo Fantasy football.

While Schaub has seen spurts of success this season, he has not come close to living up to expectations as the quarterback with the sixth best draft selection. Currently he is sitting at the thirteen spot when it comes to points scored and has been out performed by other quarterbacks like Eli Manning, Michael Vick, and Matt Ryan. Each of the quarterbacks were selected five rounds later with an average draft selection of 89.9 to 97.8.

# 4 - Larry Fitzgerald (Arizona Cardinals)

Fantasy football owners knew there was some concern in Arizona about their quarterback position the moment they brought in Derek Anderson to compete with Matt Leinart. But we ignored those warnings signs and said that it did not matter who was throwing the ball to Fitzgerald. We all knew he would score enough points to warrant an average draft selection of 21.1.

If we had listened to our guts, we would have been in better shape had we bypassed Fitzgerald in exchange for other wide receivers, like Hakeem Nicks, Mike Wallace, or Dwayne Bowe. Each of these wide receivers were taken anywhere from 50.2 to 83.8.

# 3 - Shone Greene (New York Jets)

The departure of Thomas Jones from the Jets was supposed to offer the second year back a chance to break into primetime and become one of top tier running backs in the game. This created an excitement among fantasy football owners as they took a chance on Greene with an average draft selection of 14.4.

Instead of a stud, owners were left with a dud who was out performed by other running backs like teammate LaDainian Tomlinson, Jahvid best, and Cedric Benson. Had owners used this top fifteen pick for another selections, there team may have been better off.

# 2 - Randy Moss (New England Patriots - Minnesota Vikings - Tennessee Titans)

When the season started, fantasy football owners were salivating at the thought of Tom Brady and Randy Moss hooking up for touchdowns on a weekly basis. Moss was in a contract year and would be determined to show the NFL he was one of the top wide receivers in the game.

It was this line of thought that caused Moss to jump off the board with an average draft selection at 12.1. But instead of being one of the top producing wide receivers, owners received a player who has been outperformed by other players like Nate Washington, Mario Manningham, and Johnny Knox. The one saving grace about Moss is that apparently NFL teams were thinking he would deliver the big punch for them instead of a jab here and there.

# 1 - Ryan Matthews (San Diego Chargers)

When the Chargers selected Matthews in the 2010 NFL Draft, fantasy owners everywhere began to fantasize and drool at the thought of what kind of production he would have. In fact, so many people were sold on Matthews as the best rookie running back out in the NFL, his average draft selection on Yahoo Fantasy sports was outstanding 11.9, which was seventh best among running backs.

Matthews, the kid with no experience, was selected ahead of other running backs like Matt Forte, Steven Jackson, and Arian Foster. Right now he is not even in the top 25 in scoring. As a result, Matthews has to earn the top pick for 2010 fantasy football bust.
