Six Reasons to Volunteer with Animals

For those that love animals, volunteering with an animal organization may be an option to consider, especially for those that can't or don't yet have pets. Some may be unsure if volunteering with animals is a good option. If you are someone that has been toying with the idea, there are several reasons it may be a wonderful decision.

Surrounded by Cuteness

Even if someone isn't a dog and a cat person, chances are they are at least a fan of one or the other. It's difficult to find someone that doesn't think some dogs and cats are cute. Being around adorable animals can make you feel happier and put you in a better mood. Besides, if you don't have the time and ability to take care of an animal at home, here is your chance to at least spend a little time with them.

Chance to Give Back

Volunteering with animals is a great opportunity to give back to the world. Many people try to think about how they can put some good out into the world for all that they've received. Spending some time with animals that don't yet have a forever home is a great way to go about doing it.

Meet New People

When you volunteer with animals, you already have two things in common with the people you meet: a giving attitude and a love of animals. Out of all the times I've volunteered with an animal organization, I've never met someone that I didn't like. Especially when people are around adorable animals, they are even better to be around because you usually can't help but be happy.

Develop New Skills and Learn New Information

There are many types of volunteering positions, from keeping animals company to helping the organization get records organized. Each time, you will undoubtedly learn at least one piece of information that you never knew before. If you have pets, or are planning on getting one, what you learn while volunteering with an animal organization can help you with them as well.

It's a Good Time

Volunteering with animals is a great time as long as you don't let the occasional poop or piddle mishap from one of your new four legged friends get to you. The animals are wonderful to be around, you're doing a great service and you spend a few hours with great people. While volunteering is work, I've never actually felt like that's what I was doing while I was there.

It Enhances Your Resume

Employers love seeing volunteering on a resume. It often says that the person is unselfish, willing to be a team player and goes above and beyond what they have to do on a day-to-day basis. While almost any job appreciates seeing volunteer service, If you decide to work in a career with animals, it can be especially helpful.

Some people believe that volunteering with animals means having to do it on weekends, holidays and commit to a certain number of hours per week. While some places require that, other organizations are happy with any help that they can get. Some ask for a specific amount of hours per month, others just ask that you help out at an event or when you can. You might be surprised how much of an impact spending a few hours of your time volunteering can have on the organization, the animals and on yourself.
