With more than 180 countries established on the planet, the internet is the best source to learn about what's happening in neighboring communities and distant countries. Internet users can access information from a variety of sources.
Many newspapers maintain websites where Internet users can check out the latest local, national and international news happenings. Magazines have taken to the internet as well providing online editions. A large number of radio and television stations provide live or taped broadcasts of their talk shows and popular weekly programs using an assortment of audio and video formats. Put simply, if there's something you need to know or want to learn about in the world the internet is the best source!
Social Hub
Over the last two decades the internet has added a whole new meaning to the words "social butterfly".
With internet video phone software, instant messenger software, social networking web sites and email keeping in touch with friends and family as well as developing new friendships is limited only by language barriers, which are becoming fewer as more and more people are learning to speak English each day, and the amount of time you have available for sitting in front of the keyboard.
Educational Tool
The educational value provided by a computer with internet access is, in my opinion, worth every penny spent.
Elementary, secondary and university students can look up and find information on any topic assigned in the classroom that day without having to make several trips to and from the local library's card catalogue cabinet. Google, Yahoo and MSN are just three of the many search engines appearing over the last few decades that have helped students of any age find relevant information for their school assignments.
Information Highway
To say there are hundreds of thousands of forums and message boards resting on servers around the globe would probably be an understatement. These internet sites provide a wealth of information on a daily basis.
Internet users throughout the world routinely visit craft and hobby forums and message boards providing project ideas, tips and advice. These have been very useful to me when I have been unable to solve a particular problem on my own or couldn't find a particular supply.
Usually within hours of posting my specific predicament, a user would have an answer for my dilemma. On several occasions I've had the good fortune of meeting up with users on these sites who were able to purchase and mail to me the much-needed supply not available in my area.
Health organizations such as The American Heart Association, American Diabetes Association and Arthritis Foundation provide in-depth medical explanations, dietary recommendations, and often list contact information for whatever support services they provide.
Not to be forgotten our amateur and professional chefs and bakers from around the world who share their personal recipes with the multitude of internet users visiting cooking forums daily. Even Betty Crocker has a forum on its website!
Entertainment
Young or old, we all need to play from time to time. The internet can help out with that as well. From online games to entertainment databases the internet can solve your boredom in a just a few clicks.
Game enthusiasts, often referred to as online gamers, spend many hours online playing arcade, word, strategy, role-playing, 3D, and virtual reality games. If you're not an avid game player there's a whole other area where having a computer and internet access can come in handy.
Perhaps you would like to check out a movie this coming Friday or Saturday night? No problem. If you have a computer with internet access you can log on to the Internet Movie Database and select which movie or movies you liked to watch.
The Internet Movie Database, which is often referred to as IMDB, provides extensive information regarding new releases, upcoming releases and already released movies. The IMDB, which lists members, a synopsis of the movie, reviews and star ratings, takes the guesswork out of finding a movie for renting on DVD or watching at the movie theater.
Another trend growing in popularity with internet users is downloading or watching movies or television shows online. Although this is a somewhat controversial practice in some sectors of the entertainment industry the fact remains that it is possible to do with a computer and internet access on numerous websites across the globe.
The same holds true for music enthusiasts - there are literally hundreds of thousands of sources for finding that song you love over the internet.
Another popular form of entertainment is traveling. Once more the computer and internet access are an invaluable tool for planning a day trip, weekend holiday or week long vacation whether you intend to stay close to home or travel overseas.
Questions like where to go, where to eat and where to stay can be answered in a few simple clicks. You can even book reservations online for airfare and accommodations throughout the world! You can plan your itinerary in advance to suit your needs too. One of the best things about researching your trip on the computer is being able to determine the amount of cash you'll need ahead of time so that you can plan accordingly.
Economical Investment? Yes!
Given all that can be accomplished with a computer and internet access in our daily lives it seems apparent to me that many of the things we use day in and day out such as the television, radio, CD and DVD players, newspapers and magazines and even board games and playing cards can be replaced with the computer and internet access. Is it not wiser to make a single purchase that can meet all your needs rather than several small and expensive purchases that in time will be left sitting on the shelf unused while you are sitting in front of your computer and keyboard? I think so.
