Reason for Financial Responsibility #1 - Financial Responsibility Will Never Hurt You
Although being financially responsible probably won't be as fun in the short term as being financially irresponsible, you are less likely to get into trouble in the future if you begin practicing financial responsibility early in life. You are unlikely to regret saving money, but you are likely to regret making impulse buys that drain your paycheck. Financial responsibility right now will allow you to have more fun in the future.
Reason for Financial Responsibility #2 - Financial Responsibility Allows For Problems
Many teenagers are beginning drivers, and car accidents are common. Financially responsible teens will be able to help pay for any damages and will probably be in less trouble than teens that have no monetary resources. You never know when things you own like phones and iPods might break, and being financially responsible allows you to replace them.
Reason for Financial Responsibility #3 - Financial Responsibility Pays
One of the best financial decisions a teenager can make is to put money consistently into a high-interest savings account. Over the years, the money that is placed in the account will grow and grow, and a nest egg will develop. It is best to start this early, and financial responsibility as a teen will translate into financial comfort later in life.
Reason for Financial Responsibility #4 - Financial Responsibility Keeps You Out Of Trouble
If you are financially responsible as a teenager, you are likely to have fewer problems in your life related to money. Developing financial responsibility early in life can prevent you from building up credit card debt, defaulting on loans, bankruptcy, and repossession. Likewise, you will at least be able to live a comfortable, moderate life.
Reason for Financial Responsibility #5 - Financial Responsibility is Attractive
Would you want to be in a long-term relationship with a gambling addict? It would be reasonable to not want to be in such a relationship due to the fact that this person would constantly drain financial resources from you. People who have money are typically regarded as more attractive than people who do not have money, even if they are essentially equal physically. Likewise, financial responsibility now will allow you to provide for and treat a partner later in life.
Reason for Financial Responsibility #6 - Financial Responsibility Allows for Unemployment
In today's economy, it can be difficult to find a job. Being financially responsible right now can ensure that you will have enough money to provide for yourself should you be unable to find a job for next summer, or should you not want to work during the schoolyear. Financial responsibility can get you through the tougher or busier times in life.
Being financially responsible can be difficult as a teenager. It is hard to focus on the long-term benefits of financial responsibility, and frugality is often not appreciated by peers. However, recognize that financial responsibility will benefit you in the long run and that financial responsibility does not make you "uncool," simply wiser than many people your age. If you have any other reasons why a teenager would want to be financially responsible, or are a teenager with any relevant anecdotes with regards to financial responsibility, feel free to leave your thoughts and experiences in the form of a comment.
