Six Red Sox Gifts for Dad on Father's Day

Rick Blaine
Father's Day is coming up, and you're trying to think of the perfect gift. In honor of Johnny Pesky, the latest Red Sox legend to have his uniform number retired and hung high above right field, here are six Father's Day gift ideas for the guy who took you to your first Red Sox game.

Pictures of the two of you at Fenway Park

Dig through the family album, or that shoebox filled with snapshots, and find one of the two of you taking in a game at Fenway Park. Any game will do, but if you've got a photo from that all-important first game, that's even better. He gave you the gift of being a life-long fan, now tell him how much that means to you.

Frame a baseball card of his favorite player

Is it Carl Yastrzemski? Maybe Ted Williams? Perhaps it is someone less well-known. With the expansion of the card business, and the proliferation of trading card sets, even cards featuring players from the distant past can be purchased inexpensively these days. Pick out a nice light wood 4-by-6-inch frame and some red matting, and he'll have a reminder of his own youthful days as a fan.

Boost his golf game

It may not turn him into Tiger on the fairways, but if your dad is a golfer, why not dress up his bag with Red Sox accessories? The official MLB online store features golf club covers with Red Sox logos, as well as golf balls, tees and divot replacers. There's even a customized golf towel that you can have printed with your father's name and the Red Sox logo.

Office items

The official MLB store also carries a line of wooden desk accessories with a Red Sox logo. They're made of rich walnut, and come with a brass plate and a painted enamel "B" logo. There's a business card holder, a pencil cup, and a very stylish desk clock, all in a matching style. It's would be a very professional-looking addition to any business setting.

Red Sox books

Father's Day is one of the biggest book-selling holidays of the year. Head to your local bookstore, or one of the online retailers such as Amazon.com, and choose a book for your dad. Some great choices are The Teammates: Portrait of a Friendship by David Halberstam, a slim volume about a reunion of great friends and Red Sox teammates from the 1940s; Leigh Montville's terrific Ted Williams: The Biography of an American Hero; or the insightful Feeding the Monster: How Money, Smarts and Nerve Took a Team to the Top, by Seth Mnookin.

And, though it may be hard to come by, there's the ultimate Father's Day gift for the Red Sox fan on your list.

Tickets to the game

The Red Sox host the Atlanta Braves at Fenway Park on Sunday, June 21st at 1:30pm. The game, like every other throughout the season, is sold out. But there are tickets available from reputable (an legal) resellers such as StubHub.com or Ace Tickets - as long as you're willing to pay the price. And, after all, who can put a price on everything your father has meant to you?
