You have probably seen plenty of articles online encouraging families to limit their television watching time. During the summer months, it can be very easy for the family to spend a large amount of hours in front of the television. If however you want to limit the amount of time your family spends in front of the television there are several things that you can do. Below are six tips that may in fact help your family cut back.
Plan an evening walk
Even teenagers can enjoy a little time just walking. You will find that after you have finished eating dinner it is usually a good time to head outdoors with the entire family for a fun summer walk around the neighborhood. Not only will it get you, and the family away from the television, but it will also help you burn a few calories. Of course we are not talking about a power walk here, but just a simple stroll.
Make family game night every night
Instead of making family game night once a week, why not increase that to every night. You may be a little tired after a long day's work, but it would be worth it to spend those evening hours in the summer as a family. Summer time and spring time are usually the two times of year when you can get away with nightly game time.
Garden together
If you have never had a family garden, now is really a great time to start. Just find a small patch of grass out in the yard, and let each member of the family plant something they want. This is a great family activity that will give you the opportunity to teach your child in the process
Hit the bike trail
Why not get the bikes out, and take a ride around the neighborhood. If you have young children who have just started to ride independently this is a great time to teach them about bike safety. See if you can find a park near your home that offers trails. Bike trails are usually the safest option for young new riders.
Pick up a family hobby
Why not talk as a family and see what type of hobby the entire family would be interested in doing. You may be surprised at some of the ideas that your young children can come up with. At the same time you may be learning new skills together. For example I know one family who has chosen to take up photography as a family. In the evenings they go out and take pictures with their camera. Then they come back in and compare, and see what they can create with the pictures they have taken.
Take a museum trip
Depending on where you live you may be able to spend your evenings at your local museum on an educational tour. Of course this type of activity is usually best done just once a month, but can be a nice change in evening activities that won't exactly break the bank. If you are considering a museum trip it may be a good idea to sign up for a yearly membership.
