Six Tips for Women for Valentine's Day

Or, How to Make Him Feel Special

W Thomas Payne
Ladies, Valentine's Day is right around the corner, and you're probably struggling with what sort of gift to give the man in your life. This is one of those areas where your Venus personality is completely dumbfounded by the Mars male, so here are a six tips to make that day for lovers really special for the man in your life. Valentine's Day should be for both of you to show your appreciation of each other - but you need to remember that most of his needs are very different from yours.

Feed Him

A guy is a simple beast, and he has simple needs. Food, shelter, and you can guess the last one. Pamper him at breakfast time. Get up a little early, fix him his favorite breakfast, and serve him breakfast in bed. Clothing is optional. Or if you saw a Victoria's Secret bag hidden in his closet, open your gift early. (Why guys think lingerie is a gift for the woman still remains a mystery.)

Send Him Flowers

Do you know just how few guys have ever gotten flowers from a woman - and just how much it means to a guy to get them? It doesn't need to be a fancy bouquet, it could be daisies for all he cares, the fact that you sent him flowers (don't send lilies, they give the wrong message) lets him know you love him.

Chocolates

Yes, guys like chocolate, too! Just like with the flowers, this does not have to be a fancy assortment of Belgian, hand-crafted confections (see flowers). A pretty box filled with M&Ms is probably good enough for the average guy - but a present he will appreciate, and one he has rarely ever received.

Hobby Supplies

Virtually every human male has a hobby of some kind. You know what it is. You might think it is dumb. To him, it is part of who he is. It could be his collection of model cars, or he hunts, or maybe he's just an avid sports fan for a particular team. You may not understand his special love for it, but he DOES love it, and you can show you care by finding him something unique that fits into this part of his world - which will serve as a reminder of you whenever he uses it.

A Handcrafted Card

Do not give a guy an off the shelf "I Love You" card and expect he will pay much attention to it. Guys are not wired like that. However, it is simple to create a personalized card, using any of a variety of online services, that features a picture of you, or the two of you, and your own words. This card will get a special place on his desk or bulletin board.

Music

Burn him a CD of the music the two of you have shared, or of songs that make you think of him, or remind you of him. Now, if you're a Mozart kind-of-gal and he's into Garth Brooks, this may be a tough one, but struggle through, you can do it. There will be some intersection in your musical interests, or you can suffer through listening to his style of music for a couple of hours putting together what he will pop in the player or onto his mp3 player. Have it playing when you see him after work that day.

For the record - this was written by a fully heterosexual man who is completely comfortable with his masculinity. And these are things that man would appreciate from the woman in his life for Valentine's Day.

Handmade card is an excellent suggestion. Anything personalized, and especially made by your own hands, is so very special.

Great tips! Word of caution though. I know my hubby would hate to get flowers. It's nice to hear there are some guys who do appreciat them ;)
