James Coney Island
JCI has been a landmark in Houston since I was a young boy. That is a long time for a fast food restaurant that specializes in hot dogs. Their menu has expanded over the years due to increased popularity. I tend to order the "Original" - a chili cheese coney dog with mustard and onions. As much as I hate to admit it, I usually order five at a time. James Coney Island offers just about any kind of hot dog you can think of, including the best Chicago-dog outside of the Windy City.
Taco Cabana
Houston is home to more Mexican food restaurants than there are stars in the sky. Taco Cabana offers lightening fast and great tasting authentic Mexican food. Everything is cooked in an open cafeteria style setting. Fajitas are prepared on a grill and served sizzling hot. Taco Cabana serves a variety of beers and great margaritas! Can someone call me a cab?
What-a-Burger
For me, this is the king of burger joints. Burgers are made to order and don't hit the grill until you give the command. WAB burgers are big, juicy and more than a mouthful. Only the freshest vegetables are used and sliced fresh throughout the day. The fries are some of the best on the planet. I recommend ordering the number two combination, consisting of a double cheeseburger and order of fries. One thing is certain; you will NOT go away hungry. What-a-Burger is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Are you thinking what I'm thinking? Munchies at 2 a.m.!
Church's Fried Chicken
This fast food chicken restaurant is about the size of a shoe box, mainly because it is designed for carry out. The drive through is usually busy, so don't be surprised if they tell you to pull up and wait. Trust me when I say it is worth the wait. Church's fried chicken is crunchy, juicy and so good I could eat the bones. Be sure to grab a handful of jalapeno peppers to bite between mouthfuls of this knock-your-socks off chicken!
Jason's Deli
Have you ever had a deli sandwich so enormous you couldn't get your mouth around it? It has happened to me at Jason's Deli and I have a big mouth! JDs sandwiches are monstrous. Needless to say, they don't use meat scales to measure portion sizes. Instead, they grab an over sized handful of meat and slap it on the bread. Jason's Deli specializes in customizing deli sandwiches just the way their customers like them. Ladies, take my advice and just order a half a sandwich or expect to take a doggie bag.
Jack-in-the-Box
Okay, I confess. I like Jack-in-the-Box because of their so-goofy-they-are-funny TV commercials. There is something about a big-bulbous-headed-foot-long-nosed cartoon character with a private jet that makes me roar with laughter. On a serious note, Jack-in-the-Box has one of the best breakfast menus. I recommend the Ultimate Sausage Breakfast Sandwich or their famous Breakfast Jack.
When you find yourself in Houston and want to grab something to quiet your growling stomach, these six fast food restaurants will provide you with great choices for a satisfying meal on the go.
