Six Tricks to Prevent Frizz for Curly-Haired Girls

ShawnTe Pierce

Minnie Driver, Debra Messing and Taylor Swift have gorgeous frizz-free locks that are envy of many curly-haired girls. Ever wonder how these celebs maintain a head full of frizz-free curls? True, the celebrities and maybe women you know probably have their curly manes maintained with the help of a hair stylist. However, their stylists have certain tricks they use to prevent frizz. Discover six of these tricks used to create frizz-free curly locks.

Shampoo Less to Prevent Frizz

Do not confuse this with not washing your hair. You can wash your hair without using shampoo. Rinsing with water and a lightweight conditioner can actually wash the hair ridding it of dirt, sweat and debris. Shampoo should be used to remove product build-up and excess oil from the hair and scalp. Shampooing the hair daily, especially with a harsh shampoo, can strip the hair and scalp of the natural oil that keep them moisturized and healthy. Curly hair that lacks adequate moisture becomes frizzy and unruly hair.

Use a Hair Glaze

Using an at-home hair glaze will help flatten your hair cuticles thus helping to eliminate frizz. Raised cuticles not only foster frizzy hair but they leave hair looking dull, not holding much shine. If you color your curly tresses, a hair glaze will keep your color fresher, longer. For a daily frizz fighting boost pour a little bit of the hair glaze into a bottle of your daily conditioner.

Follow with a Cool Water Rinse

Further prevent frizz by sealing the cuticle with a cool or cold water rinse. This is best done in the shower where the water is pouring down over your hair. Rinse hair with cool or cold water for about two to three minutes. Make sure you do this after rinsing out your conditioner.

Don't Rub Hair Dry

Some curly haired girls follow the previous two tricks yet still complain about having frizzy hair with little shine. One cause could be they are undoing the work of the glaze and cool rinse by taking a terry cloth towel and rubbing their hair dry with it. Doing this raises the cuticle again., so the preventive measures of the at-home glaze and cool rinse are voided. Follow these two steps to remove excess water after washing hair:

  1. Wring hair out. Just wring hair as you would a towel. For shorter hair you may need to wring out sections of hair.
  2. Blot hair dry using a t-shirt or absorbent paper towels. These are gentler on the hair. Plus, blotting hair dry lessens friction that will cause the cuticles to be raised again.

Style Hair with Tender Loving Care (TLC)

Gently styling hair goes a long way to prevent frizz. If you use a frizz fighter, apply it to the hair and let it sit for around 10 minutes so the product has time to settle into the hair. After 10 minutes, proceed to blow dry the hair. When blow drying, use the lowest heat setting. High heat settings rob the hair of moisture causing frizz. If you have the time, it is best to allow hair to air dry after you apply a frizz fighter. You are touching the hair less and saving it from heat damage.

Reduce Friction at Night

Remember how rubbing the hair with a towel creates cuticle raising friction on the hair? Well when we sleep at night our heads are tossing and turning on our pillows. The weight of our heads against the pillow created friction that not only leads to hair frizz but can cause breakage as well. If you have long hair, pull it back into a loose bun and cover hair with a silk scarf. For shorter hair, cover it with a silk scarf and tuck the ends of your hair inside of the scarf so no hair is exposed.

These six tricks to prevent hair frizz are not very hard to follow. Depending on the condition of your hair, you may need to modify to suit your specific curly hair needs. If you hair is normally dry, you may want to incorporate a weekly deep conditioning or hot oil treatment. For African-American curly hair, you may wish to apply hair oil to your dry tresses for added moisture. Above all, treat your curly locks with TLC to prevent frizz.
