Olive oil does more than just help food taste good and be good for you, olive oil also has some practical uses around the house. Soften lips, stop a squeak or a snore and much more with olive oil.
Olive Oil Softens Lips
Cold winter air or direct sunlight can take it's toll on delicate lips and cause them to chap, blister and/or crack open. Olive soothes, softens and promotes healing to dry, chapped lips. Just rub a couple of drops of olive oil onto lips (right out of the bottle) as needed to promote healing and softness. For a take-along olive oil lip cure, it's easy to make your own olive oil lip balm with this recipe found on Curbly : Mix one part olive oil and one part melted beeswax (available at craft or health food store) and pour the mixture into an old, clean lip gloss pot. Place in the refrigerator to harden overnight.
Stop a Squeak
A couple of drops of olive oil can stop a door or drawer from squeaking and make them much easier to open and close. Pour a few drops of olive oil onto a paper towel and rub into door hinges or drawer sliders. If feasible, dribble the olive oil directly onto squeaky door hinge and wipe off excess. The dailygreen recommends it over WD-40 for the greener aspect.
Stop a Snore
Got a snorer at your house? One tablespoon of olive will stop the snore before it starts. Take one tablespoon of olive oil each night just before bedtime. The olive oil lubricates the throat tissue so air can flow more freely and prevent snoring, according to Chrisjob of Curbly.
Olive Oil Gets Paint Out of Hair
Most of us DIYs have gotten paint in our hair while working on a project and olive oil will get it out. After the painting done, soak a cotton ball with olive oil and rub it through your hair, starting at the roots and rubbing down toward the end before shampooing. The olive oil will lift the paint right off the hair and the shampoo will wash the paint and olive oil away. This paint removal trick has a positive side effect too. The olive oil nourishes the hair and leaves it soft, shiny and conditioned.
Remove Sticky Residue
When price stickers or tape leave behind a sticky residue on glass of plastic, a little olive oil will remove it. Rub a little olive oil onto the sticky spot with your fingertips or a clean cloth. The olive oil breaks down the glue and removes the sticky residue.
Shine Stainless Steel Appliances
Get rid of those unattractive streaks and make stainless steel appliances gleam with olive oil. Dr. Steel of Stainless Online says it's the best way to remove fingerprints. Dampen a clean cloth with olive oil and rub all over stainless steel surface. Let sit for five minutes, then buff to a gleaming shine with a clean, dry cloth.
