Six Ways to Upgrade Your Old Clothes

Stephanie Modkins
Want to upgrade your old clothes? Use the following 6 tips. They can help you make what was fashionable five years ago, brand new for today. Just:

1. Shorten the hem.
Through the drycleaners are with a needle and thread, shorten the hemlines of a flowing dress or pair parents. You can turn a floral disaster into a cute mini or a pair of worn jeans into flattering petal pushers. You can also use this same idea to extend or shorten the length of sleeves.

2. Dye your jeans.
Jeans rarely go out of style. Yet, you can upgrade your old ones and refresh them by changing their color. With dye meant for clothes, darken them into a deeper blue or black. Be sure to follow the instructions on the kit you purchase so you don't mess up.

3. Add accessories.
Revive a long, plain t-shirt or blouse with accessories. Belts are making a comeback this winter. So, cinch these items with an ultra-feminine belt or skinny leather one. Either choice will make an archaic item appear to be new.

4. Layer your pieces.
Upgrade your old clothes by layering them with trendy pieces. Turn your archaic tops into something fun with the now popular sweater vest or shrug. These items will camouflage what you've had for years and also hide any nasty stains, rips or tears. You can also do the same with a boyfriend jacket.

5. Visit the dry cleaners.
Unfortunately, repeatedly washing clothes with cheap detergent can change their color and size. For your tried-and-true outfits that are looking dreary, take them to the dry cleaners. Spend the extra money necessary to bring these items back to life. Afterward, invest in a few bottles of Woolite or Tide. Both detergents have a reputation of getting the dirt out of clothes without damaging them.

6. Reposition your clothes.
The reason why some people always look nice is because they know how to rearrange their clothes. Follow in their footsteps. Upgrade your old clothes by using this technique. Shirts you usually let hang loose, tuck in. Wear knee-high boots to change the look of your pants. Pair your dresses with slacks. By repositioning your clothes, you can expand your number of outfits.

Excited (again) about your current wardrobe? Use these six suggestions and reinvent what you own. You don't have to run to the mall every time you have an urge to wear something new.
