From Accident and Hell to Why, Hooker, Blue Ball and Intercourse

We live in a strange world that just seems to get stranger with each passing day. Most of us expect the unexpected as headlines appear out of nowhere with fresh news concerning weird and unexplained circumstances happening every minute on our planet. It keep's us consistently on our toes in preparation of things to come, and sometimes if we are lucky, lessons are learned along the way that strengthens us, while at other times our faith is tested to the fullest extent. Mostly we hope and pray that we can avoid these strange, odd and totally weird circumstances from happening to us, and embrace the things that we cannot change.

Many of us have come across a strange event, circumstance or even a strange place that comes across even weirder due to the name it has been given. Sometimes the odd name makes perfects sense as it derives from something that the city offers or it has been named after someone famous, but more so then not, the city's strange name makes no sense at all.

Six City's in the World with Odd, Weird and Strange Names

Accident, Maryland: Who would have thought that a miscalculation between two white oak trees, also known as the "accident tract" would cause such extreme future events that would lead to a strange town name, and war time soldiers eventually receiving 50 acres of property due to surveying issues. Why not call the town, Oops, Boo-boo, mishap, or a fortuitous circumstance? It is no accident that the town is simply beautiful, or that it is filled with many attractions and a wonderfully reserved quiet country life that many folks are proud to call home. Accident was incorporated in 1916, and is the home of the famous Drane House, built in 1798. http://accidentmd.org/

Blue Ball, Pennsylvania: That name comes off as possibly having something to do with sexual tension, but it is anything but. The quiet Amish community in Lancaster County with the strange name was named after the Blue Ball Hotel, which was built over two-hundred years ago, but no longer graces the town. Note*Blue Ball and Intercourse, Pennsylvania are only 3 hours apart, with Beavertown located directly in the middle of the two cities. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blue_Ball,_Pennsylvania

Condom, France: Famous for the Condom Cathedral, but even more so for the street signs that are quite often the targets of thieving tourists, for nothing more then a great conversation piece. Curiously, the town is located on the river Baïse; but after dissecting it, the word baise, without the diaeresis, is a crudely indecent French word for a sex act. The town is a popular attraction to control-device lovers, but not because of the sexual innuendos, but instead because of the museum of famous population-control devices. http://www.francethisway.com/places/condom.php

Fucking, Austria: This strange town was founded in the 6th century by Focko, and has a population of 104, but receives thousands of visitors yearly, simply out of curiosity, with a few tourists who want to steal one of the four "Fucking" street signs for a souvenir. The city is pronounced "Foo-king" and it has been made famous by nothing more then its name that has a different meaning in the English speaking world. The spelling has changed over the years with the first recorded spelling in 1070 as Vucchingen, according to historical sources. In 1303 it was recorded as Fukchin, and by the 18th century the official records show it spelled as Fucking.

Hell, Michigan: Aptly named by George Reeves in 1841 because the townspeople had already been referring to it as Hell since 1838, for lack of a better description. The large part of the town's history of missing horse riders, and driverless buggy drivers lends to the name, but the focal point would come from the grumpy women with missing husbands due to the making of moonshine at the local mill, and whiskey still from days gone by. George answered the state of Michigan when they asked about an official city name, by stating "call it Hell for all I care"! They did just that. http://www.hell2u.com/

Why, Arizona: Why is located just 30 miles from the border of Mexico, and has total of 113 residents. The city's strange name was made up from two state highways coming together at an intersection shaped like a Y. The founders of Why wanted to spell it as the letter "Y", but state law requires city names to have at least three letters. The town is now shaped like a "T", but still goes by Why, Arizona. Things to do in Why: Tour the Organ Pipe National Monument and gamble at the local casino.

A Few More Notetable Cities:

Disappointment, Kentucky
Hot Coffee, Mississippi
PeePee, Ohio
Boring, Oregon
Hooker, Arkansas
Wank, Germany
Intercourse, Pennsylvania
Muff, Ireland
Horneytown, North Carolina
