Sixties and Seventies Science Fiction Halloween Costumes

There are a large number of excellent costume ideas from the 60's and 70's in television and film series.

A large number of high quality television shows and movies such as Bonanza, The Wild Wild West, Happy Days, The Bionic Woman, etc. hailed from the 60's and the 70's. These series are an inexhaustible source of inspiration for anyone who is looking for a Halloween costume. But the 60's and the 70's have been especially productive in science fiction productions accessible to the general public and particularly to the whole family.

There were movies beforehand in science fiction but the 60's and the 70's made science fiction into a household genre and there were two specific series that helped get this done. The first one of these series is Star Trek, Gene Roddenberry's brainchild. While, Star Trek was famous for things like travelling across the space looking for other civilizations as well as the fictional teleportation machine, the series was also very popular for the particular types of costumes it brought up.

A great example is that if you are a Star Trek Communication officer Nyota Uhura from this time period, you would be wearing a uniform that involved a red dress as well as black shoes. This is something that would be recognized instantly by people that were fans of the show. Another great example is that Star Trek was also renowned for "redshirt syndrome", in which a non-main character in a red shirt would beam down to a planet with the team and get killed. Wearing that kind of costume this upcoming Halloween could win you some laughs and cheers from the party guests if you turn it into something humorous.

Star Trek was not the only science fiction franchise to get its start during these two decades however as Star Wars also had its foundation laid during this period of time. Star Wars was created by George Lucas and was a wholly different beast from Star Trek, involving Jedi Knights, The Force and some of the more memorable characters to ever come out of science fiction. The best examples of Star Wars characters are Luke Skywalker, Princess Leia, Han Solo and Darth Vader, and you could model your next Halloween costume after any of these characters. Alternatively, there are storm troopers, imperial soldiers in grey uniforms and the starfighter pilot in orange uniform, Wedge Antilles, that would all be very recognizable as well.

Star Trek and Star Wars are only two of the many series produced during the 1960's and the 1970's however there are a lot more television or movie series such as The Invaders, My Favorite Martian or Planet of the Apes that are also great resource for Halloween costumes.
