Skate Boarders a Problem!?

Melanie Dee
Last week there was an article in my local town paper about skate boarder's becoming a problem in our area. It was basically a rambling about how these 'skateboarders' create too much noise and do not abide by the signs saying 'no skateboards allowed.' I am sure we have all seen them. These signs have a picture of a skateboard and roller blades with a big ol' red circle with an slash through them.

I have a big issue with one of the statements, about how they are becoming a nuisance. Hah! What a joke! For one, there is more noise created in these local towns created by cars with radios blasting in the wee hours of the night, and there is more noise created by construction workers and peoples barking goddamn dogs that they never bring inside. More noise than any kid on a frigging skateboard could EVER create.

I didn't know the sound of rolling wheels passing you by for 10 seconds is such a distraction. I live in the town of Mastic Beach, and work out in Moriches. I have seen a large amount of skateboarders this summer season, however I have not once ever had a problem with these kids. They roll by and maybe jump a staircase...if anything they are works of art. Yet where one disagrees, one agrees that they are 'annoying'. How so though, is beyond me. I don't see how kids on boards could possibly add noise, and bring the value of a neighborhood down.

If my town is seriously having an issue with kids on skateboards maybe they should spend their time worrying about peoples dogs roaming the streets, or the trash that litters these once clean sidewalks where these kids skate. Maybe they should worry about cars that have radios so loud it shakes the house. But no, they are too concerned about new ways to ticket kids for getting exercise, and getting outdoors doing something recreational. This is pathetic!

Would these complainers rather these kids sit inside all day getting fat while they play video games, or would they rather have them join gangs and sit at street corners picking up drugs. These people should be more concerned about things that ACTUALLY effect our community, verse a few kids on a set of wheels rolling through the town.

These skateboarders are not your average kids, these kids are not causing trouble, these kids are out to perfect their sport. They are not rolling by and making noise, they are not trashing the streets, and they sure as hell don't waste their time to stop and read signs about where they can and cannot skate.

I find it ridiculous that a kid on a board cannot skate on certain sidewalks, yet people on bikes can. I'd rather have a kid on a skateboard ram into me vs. a kid going almost 20mph on a bike.

If this town is going to pass new laws for children on skateboards they may as well ban kids in general.

What the hell is this community coming to? For once in this towns life we have kids outside doing things, and now we want to stop them? However 3 years ago when skateboarding was not as popular in our community and video games were, we would see articles saying kids needed to get outside and smell the roses...then when they do, the community wants them back inside. Hah! What hypocritical ding dongs.

It's not like they are zooming out in front of traffic, nor are they smoking pot, or drinking alcohol. They are slowly skating by peacefully on their boards. Yet some folks in our community feel as if they are too noisy.

Wow, just wow! What next Suffolk? What next?

I work at Kohls, in Shirley, as security. Almost everyday, I see skaters come in, walk aimlessly around the store, do no wrong, except for maybe forgetting to flush the toilets! Customers have come in and complained that these kids shouldnt be let in the store, when clearly they dont do anything wrong. Perhaps a skatepark of some sort is needed for these kids, to please everybody. Hire ex EMT's to stand by in case of an accident, and perhaps charge an entrance fee and LET THEM BE KIDS!

dam i know exactly what you are saying... adults now a days dont even know what they want anymore. if they dont want us to do drugs , have sex , join gangs , kill people , sit around doing nothing , or deface property then just let us skate! not many have noticed that skaters are ALOT OF a hell less important than drug dealers or gangs yet they still harrass us and dont let us do what we want to do or dont give us suggestions for anything else

wow..this article.. its amazing.... seriously... i'm %110 in agreement with this... its the same way here in Franklin north Carolina.... i see people on bikes skating in the middle of the damn highway of all places, and they have a right to... i skate, but i know my own limits... i don't skate in the road... i skate on the sidewalk and still get in trouble for it by the cops... me and my friend where actually skating outside of a store where we had permission and we still got a citation by the cops.. its freakin ridiculous... we get harassed EVERYWHERE we go... we've even been questioned by the police for PUTTING MONEY IN A SODA MACHINE!!!!!! its getting to the point to where im expecting harassment... not just from the police. but Franklin citizens as well... i was actually skating in MY OWN driveway not anywhere close to the traffic... and some guy stops in the middle of the road and has a line of traffic behind him just to say... "the sheriffs office is right up the road want me to

my grandaughter loves skateboarding, at thirteen I can think of a lot of thngs she could be doing, smoking, drinking, drugs, sleeping around, shop lifting, swearing, she does none of these things, she's a grade a student who puts her school work and home work before any hobby, she has made a lot of new friends, really nice kids from really nice familly's, and the most important thing to me is, I know where
she is when she's out, at the skate park, not a great big one it has to be said, but all the kids that use it are really proud of it because, they
asked the council for it themselves, perhaps all the people who take joy in moaning about our kids, on their beloved skateboards could
perhaps try to motivate them into asking your council to build them a place, so they can have their sport and you can have your peace,???

You know I am a mom of young kids and older kids skating on thier long boards IS keeping my children up. The wheels on the board when they hit the each divit in the sidewalk makes a loud noise. Over and over again. Thump, thump, thump. Then there are the yells back and forth. Plain rude. Get a clue. Thiere are other people around at 10:30pm that need to sleep.
