Skateboarding: How to Do Basic Nollie and Switch Tricks

Drew Phillips
Well first off you need to know what Nollie and Switch are. If you stand on your board in your normal stance, that's called Regular. Now from Regular if you stick your front foot on the nose of the board, that is called Nollie, and the tricks you do from that are also called Nollie. Now, if you stand in the opposite stance of the one your most comfortable with, that's called Switch. Tricks done from this stance are also called Switch.

Now like with normal stance, the first tricks you need to learn how to do switch and Nollie, are an Ollie. It's the same concept as the Normal and Fakie Ollie. First go find a carpet, or go on some grass, and just work on the motion. For me it was easier when I would put my front foot closer to the lower half of the board. Snap the back down like a Normal Ollie, and slide your foot up the board. All this trick is is practice. Practice this and get good at it, and it will make all Switch tricks easier. The next thing is a Nollie which is an Ollie done off the nose of the board with the foot you would normally flick your tricks with snapping the board. That is the same thing, but if you practice it stationary it's just a Switch Ollie. You need to do this one moving, and only do it after you have your Switch Ollie down. The best advice I have for this trick is to just lean over your board, and make sure you don't lose your center.

The next tricks I recommend learning are one eighties. There isn't one way that's easier than the other. It's all personal, if you feel more comfortable going back side over front side, than do it that way. Both ways have pretty much the same technique. All it is, is you do the switch Ollie, or Nollie and throw your shoulders in the direction you want to do the one eighty in. I like to really wind up before I pop this trick. Some people like doing them late and Ollie first than throw their shoulders. Once more it's all personal preference. You should probably make sure you can do regular and fakie one eighties first. Cause it's the same concept just switched.

The last tricks that I would consider easy to learn, are Nollie Shove-its and Switch Shove-its. These tricks are just done with one foot. A good way to learn these is to take a deck without anything on it, put it on a carpet and just focus on spinning the trick. Once you can spin it and land it, you should get your regular board, and work on just spinning it with one foot while not standing on the board. After you can do that, stand on the board and learn it stationary. Than with Switch Shove-its, just do what you would do for a Regular Shove-it, it's as simple as that. With Nollie it's just a quick flick of your front foot. Easy, right? Good now go learn it!
