Ski Bulgaria: Experience the Best Winter Values in Europe

Skiing in Bulgaria Offers the Most "Bang for Your Buck" in All of Europe

While Austria, France and Switzerland dominate the European ski scene, the small country of Bulgaria is quickly becoming recognized as the "next big thing" in European snow sports. As much of Eastern Europe fights to shed its negative political reputation, the former Communist nation of Bulgaria has risen above many of its neighbors to become a well functioning Republic in a very short amount of time. While the lodging located at some of Bulgaria's skiing hot spots may be a bit "basic" for western tourists, the skiing itself is absolutely unmatched for the price.

Bansko is among the country's most popular and well-developed resorts. Located in the Pirin Mountains, Bansko is home to some of the most well known tourist attractions in all of Bulgaria. There are top rated hotels and nightlife spots located very close to the resort, and bus service is offered to and from the countries capital city, Sofia. Daily passes for adults can be purchased for as low as $30, and when paired with the low cost of lodging and food, you have one of the best "bang for buck" skiing destinations on earth. Snowboarders will be happy to know that there is an established terrain park and half-pipe, while those who prefer to face forward down the slopes will find a wide array of beginner, intermediate and expert descents. As far as skiing in Bulgaria is concerned, Bansko is definitely at the top of the line.

Borovets is another popular Bulgarian destination located in the Rila Mountains (about 70 kilometers from the capital city of Sofia). This spot is slightly less developed than Bansko, but the skiing is just as amazing. Challenging trails as high as 9000 feet await the more experienced skier, while beginners can find their way around a number of quality descents as well. The Rila Hotel sits near the foot of the ski area and offers tourists with a top rated lodging experience. While other hotels are located in the area, Rila offers the most convenience and highest quality service.

Vitosha is a much smaller and less developed resort located only minutes away from Sofia. Its close proximity to such a major metropolitan area is great for those looking to minimize expenditures while having a great experience on the slopes. Vitosha is not for everyone though, the lodging is not nearly as developed as many westerners might be accustomed to, and if you plan on spending all of your time close to the slopes you probably won't find much in the way of high quality entertainment either. Lack of nearby tourist development aside, the actual skiing experience is unmatched for the price, and downtown Sofia isn't all that far away.

If you are looking to experience the wonderful mountains of Europe without spending a small fortune, look no further than Bulgaria.

Great review! At this point in my life, I think I would break both legs if I ever tried to ski, however!

I've always wanted to visit Bulgaria--had no idea it was a good skiing place though, thanks
