So I was looking for a ski resort with slopes for beginners, and possibly a few ski lessons. The Suicide Six resort seemed to me the ideal pick. It's located approx. 3 miles north of Woodstock, Vermont on VT 12.
Suicide Six Resort in Vermont has in total 23 trails - 30% easy, 40% intermediate, and 30% advanced. Including the infamous "Face", which has challenged skiers for over 50 years. However, I was more interested in the "Easy Mile", a great trail for beginners.
Two double chair lifts serve the area, and a lodge at the base operates a cafeteria, restaurant, a ski shop, and a great ski school with certified instructors. The J-bar lift ticket was only $10 for the whole day; the full ski ticket for an adult is $55 during the weekend and $36 during the weekdays.
The J-bar is located at the beginner's slope, where I spent my first day, learning the first rules of skiing - how to stop. I booked a group lesson for one hour ($50) and was surprised to see that my group turned out to be just me and a ski instructor. Suicide Six offers lessons for all abilities, not only for beginners, for both skiers and snowboarders.
After one hour learning the basics of skiing, I felt sure enough to leave the beginner's slope and tackle the "Easy Mile." During the lift ride, I had a chat with another skier, who said he was skiing at Suicide Six for over thirty years.
Suicide Six Ski Resort in Woodstock, Vermont has a long skiing tradition since 1934. The first ski tow in the United States was rigged up on a slope just outside the village. Suicide Six is surrounded by other, larger ski resorts such as Killington. While Killington Ski Resort is the largest ski and snowboard resort in the eastern United States, I prefer Suicide Six.
Especially noteworthy is the familiar and relaxed atmosphere at Suicide Six. Despite the terrifying name, I found Suicide Six to be an excellent ski area. Everyone I talked to-from the ski instructor, to the guys operating the lift, to other skiers-was just very friendly and outgoing. I also wholeheartedly recommend Suicide Six for families with small children.
I never waited longer than 10 minutes at the lifts, and the area surrounding the ski area is downright idyllic with its meadows and wooded hills. I'll definitely visit Suicide Six again.
