Skin - the Most Important Organ of Your Body

Sean
It might be hard to believe the fact that our skin is made up of 800,000,000 cells. The skin is the largest organ of our body, as it covers and protects each and every inch of our internal structural frame. It has a thickness of 1.227mm, and on average, the skin weighs around six pounds.

Even though the skin can be perceived as having a minimal thickness, it protects us from external elements such as heat and cold and also provides us with the ability to sense stimulus such as pressure and heat.

A number of biochemical reactions take place in the body every second. All these reactions result in toxic waste materials as byproducts. The skin is one of the most efficient means by which the body can get rid of these toxic substances. About half a pound of wastes accumulated through metabolism are released through the skin every day.

The skin not only releases toxins from the body, but also absorbs substances that are placed on it. The skin is a very sensitive organ in the body as it absorbs approximately sixty percent of the material applied to it. This implies that the materials that are absorbed by the skin are bound to enter the tissues and blood vessels, thus circulating through the entire body. For this reason, many drugs are prescribed to be applied through the skin. For instance some of the skin patches such as estrogen and progesterone, which are the female hormones, are applied through the skin.

These days, most of the cosmetic products on the market are loaded with chemicals. Some of the cosmetic skin care products prove to be more harmful to the body in the long run because of the overload of chemicals in our system. Therefore we must be very careful when choosing skin care products such as lotions and hair sprays, as these products might contain potentially toxic chemicals that can wreck havoc on our system when absorbed through the skin.

Some of the chemicals present in these so-called skin care products are also carcinogenic. These are potential contributors of cancer and other conditions. Some chemicals are also capable of disrupting the hormone balance in our body, thus leading to complications that we otherwise would prefer to avoid.

These days we are so concerned as to what we are putting into our body, but we fail to pay attention to what we are putting on it. This defeats the very purpose of what we are trying to do, which is to take care of our body.

In the past, everything was organic, and there was no need to worry about what we were trying to put into our system, as organic products are naturally chemical free. However, during modern times, genetic alteration is at its peak, and it's hard to come across a food or skin care product that hasn't been chemically altered.

Therefore the best thing one can do to keep their skin healthy and glowing, whilst not being afflicted by the negative effects of chemicals, is by resorting to organic skin care products. We all have a choice when it comes to caring for our body. Chose organic products and give your body what it deserves, which is the best of natural and organic skin care.
