Skin-Smoothing Facial Masks: Get Ready for Spring

Laura Leiva
For a skin-smoothing facial mask, chances are you don't have to look much further than the kitchen. After the winter has zapped all the moisture out of your face, get ready for spring and summer by applying a facial mask once or twice a week for a soothing and smoothing treatment. These smoothing masks not only help to add natural moisture back into the face, but those who have sensitive skin can refrain from using harsh exfoliators to remove dry patches on the face.

Yogurt

Yogurt is not only healthy for the digestive tract thanks to probiotics like L. acidophilus but another special ingredient, lactic acid, works to remove dead skin cells from the face, reduce pore size and moisturize. Lactic acid is a form of Alpha Hydroxy Acids (AHA) and often found in expensive skin care products on store shelves. Take advantage of the skin smoothing ingredients in yogurt for half the cost, not to mention the cooling texture yogurt has to offer the skin.

To make a yogurt mask, simply apply plain unflavored yogurt to the face and massage it into the skin using a circular motion. Let it soak in for about 20 minutes before rinsing off with lukewarm water. Follow up with your favorite moisturizer.

Avocado

Aside from tasting delicious, avocado contains natural oils, vitamins and minerals. The oil found in avocado is hydrating and does not leave residue on the skin while locking in moisture, and the vitamins and minerals nourish the skin topically. Avocado is also helpful in removing dirt and oil from the pores in addition to smoothing and softening skin.

Use a mashed up avocado to create a facial mask, and apply to the entire face. For a soothing effect, put the mashed avocado in the refrigerator for a few minutes to cool off and then rub into the skin. Leave the mask on for 15 minutes and then rinse off with lukewarm water.

Cucumber

Anyone who has ever had sunburned skin knows how nicely cucumber feels when applied to the skin, and now you don't have to wait to be uncomfortable to use it in your beauty routine. Cucumber is not only skin-soothing thanks to the refreshing feel, but it also helps to tighten pores and refine the skin.

Create a mask by grating an entire cucumber and then apply the pulp to the skin and lay back and relax. Leave the cucumber on the face for 20 minutes, and then rinse off with lukewarm water and pat dry.
