Skittles Chocolate Mix Not Worth Risking Taste Buds Over

Jared DuBach
Just when it seems Skittles has come out with enough flavor variations, they come out with a new one that, well, maybe shouldn't have left the boardroom.

The new Skittles chocolate mix leaves a bit to be desired. First, if one wants a small coated candy that tastes like chocolate, why not just go for M&Ms? The flavor combo includes vanilla, chocolate pudding, brownie batter, s'mores, chocolate caramel. And, the inside of the candy is the same consistency as the fruit flavored ones.

People who like this candy are most likely the same people who think the chocolate wafer in Necco wafers is the best one. The only thing the chocolate mix may be good for is people who are allergic to real chocolate or for sale in hot climates. I imagine this being a big seller in the Sahara Desert.

Seriously, though, what's better than artificial chocolate? Oh, I know! Real chocolate!

The vanilla flavored pieces are probably the best tasting. I say "probably" because they aren't even that good. The s'mores flavored pieces only taste remotely of Graham crackers, and no marshmallow or chocolate. Chocolate pudding flavor tastes vaguely of generic brand instant no-cool pudding and chocolate caramel is void of any caramel taste. The brownie batter is probably the best because it actually tastes like chocolate.

There's just something about having an artificially flavored candy priced the same as the same sized package of M&Ms. What's worse is M&Ms and Skittles are both made by M&M Mars. I just don't see this product being on the market long. Other types of Skittles have done well because they make sense in having various fruit flavors or coming in a sour variety. M&Ms has had success with peanut butter, various nuts, crispy texture and the commendable longevity of its flagship plain variety.

What's more, even an hour after finishing the pack, I'm left with an odd aftertaste in my mouth that's difficult to get rid of. Having eaten a whole pack of those horrid little things, I was hoping at least the taste would leave me. But it hasn't. The aftertaste, however, is at least an improvement upon the initial crappy taste of the actual Skittles. I guess it could always be worse.

My advice? Steer clear of these bad boys, or you're liable to question the validity of your existence as you sit with a mouth full of sub-par chocolaty despair.
