Sky and Sea, Blue Illusions

Light and Reflection Plays Tricks on Perception

David A. Reinstein, LCSW

The blanket of sky
Stretches over
And around
This word of green,
Black and blue,
Thinning over some spots
And thickened over
Others,
It is fluffed and spread
By life above and below,
Not by thoughts thought
Or words said.
Instead,
Just to add to
Some confusion,
We are told that
The blue of it
Is an illusion
Like the blue of the sea
Which it reflects through.
How does one illusion
Illuminate
And give a spectrum
Of definition to
Yet another?

Sometimes the sea
Appears green
From below
We infer
Because the sky has
Never appeared
Green.
Below are algae and other life;
Not illusions.
Some morning
The sky may light in green
As the illusion
Dissipates
And that which is
Touchably tangible
Gives color and substance
To that blue blanket
That is not inherent.

Given to compromise,
We call the sea blue-green.
Though it's reflection
In the atmosphere
Is never humanly
Seen.

I am told that
The sky is actually black
And that the waters of the sea
Are clear.
Light paints our liquid base
And covering blanket
With colors,
Or so it would appear.
A magical palette
Painted with strokes of
Pristine inception
On the canvas of our
Understandably human
Perception.

It does depend on how we see things to a degree, but some things are concrete and never-changing. Superbly philosophical, David. Thanks!

Oh David, this is beautiful and deep all at the same time. Perceptions really are everything; they provide us with what we think is reality.

Perception and how it is qualified by the brain, not to mention the actual as opposed to the spectrally enhanced, is a constant reminder that seeing what you believe you see is a matter of cognitive assimilation and is often guided by socially accepted preconcepts. Actuality aside: Seeing often really is believing...
