Skylar Grey is a female singer/ songwriter that really took the music world by storm by becoming a favorite voice amongst the R &B and rap crowd. She was featured in "Where'd You Go," from the band Fort Minor; which is the side project of Linkin Park member Mike Shinoda. Diddy-Dirty Money has featured her in the song "Coming Home," and she has also worked with Eminem, Dr. Dre, and Lupe Fiasco to name a few more genre artists. It is her time to shine solo now and the first single from her upcoming album has a music video to introduce Skylar Grey to audiences once again. The name of the song is "Dance Without You."
"Dance Without You" is a simple, but smart song, with the music video being a little under three minutes long in length. Lyrically there is some play with dance terminology with implied secondary meanings of course. One could interpret the content as someone wanting to try life without the control of the ever present monkey on the back ala someone having a less than wonderful impact on their life via some sort of personal relationship.
The music itself is a sexy rock pop song, sleek, and beat-tastic with beat boxing to open and an ever constant driving drum rhythm.
The music video for "Dance With You" is a single location premise with a Skylar Grey as a long hair down, and blondish brown, young woman in a hospital style gown, stretching in an exam chair. Her bare feet sport some tattoos and move about as if they have some dance steps aching to get out of them. The room is set up like a simple doctor's office, white as can be, with some square x-ray board type of things on the wall. The girl acts more like a mental patient with an itch though than a medical patient in need of her monthly physical.Skylar Grey number two appears in what I am calling the x-ray boxes, hair up and dark, she sings, and watches the other her that writhes in apparent torment. The torment becomes very apparent when it goes from just being a disturbed girl to being a girl who has hands and faces appearing on the skin of her back; they appear shadowy, meant to seem like another person is trying to tear out of this girl from her back. Then some arms wrap around the Skylar from behind and Skylar Grey number two is no longer confined to the x-ray boxes, she is out in the room.
Skylar Grey Two enters the room dressed all in black, she is a rock star vixen from her boots up to her black hair with a blond stripe through it. She seems to be the person Skylar One is wishing to dance without, or perhaps Skylar Two is wishing to dance without number one, for she is the more confident feeling version, though dark and twisted seeming. The relationship in question seems to then be between this girl and herself, alter egos perhaps, wishing a part of oneself having a negative impact on life would just tear away. I am thinking both Skylars may wish to be rid of the other, one wishing to be free of the demon, the other a weaker side of herself.
And the video ends. But the curiosity into what Skylar Grey still has to offer does not. She is an interesting artist who is making interesting music in a industry that seems filled with people trying too hard to be interesting and in turn just being more bland pop acts wearing ridiculous outfits.
"Dance Without You" is a video worth checking out. Even if you end up not liking it or the song you won't have wasted much time, because she sings her piece, gives you some haunting visuals, and then is out of there, possibly to work on the rest of the music for her album which seems promising.
