Skylights

The Pros and Cons of Having Skylights

Denise Larkin
A skylight is installed on a ceiling of a room. It is perfect for lighting up a room that looks gloomy or dim, as sun rays will shine through giving the room brightness and warmth. Sunlight coming in from a skylight will create more heat to a room, especially in winter, therefore cutting down electric and gas bills. It is a feature that will, also, make the room stand out, as there are some beautiful skylight designs on offer.

Having a skylight in any room will increase the value of your home without a doubt. If you are thinking of modernizing your home in some way, then this is the perfect opportunity for adding a skylight to any kind of room. Whether it is a living room, the kitchen area, a loft/attic room or a bedroom it will provide beauty. Just imagine sitting in there and being able to look up at the sky in the daytime or even looking up at a star filled, moon lit sky. It is a good investment and there are many skylights to choose from, such as, glass or acrylic skylights.

There are different shaped skylights that will enhance any room. If you have a small room that needs brightening, then choosing the correct shaped skylight will provide enhancement to the decor. It will make the area distinct from any other room in the house. Dome skylights are an example of one of many shapes that are available.

A skylight can be a good idea if an extension is being installed. There will be the opportunity of having any shape of skylight for that room. Skylights, also, require only a minimum of care and cleaning. The rain usually washes off any dirt there is, so there is not much need for cleaning, just clean with a soft cloth, detergent and warm water if it is needed.

Acrylic vs Glass Skylights

There are different kinds of skylights. There is glass and acrylic. The difference between them is that glass skylights will let more sunlight through, but it will be direct sunlight. There will be some UV protection in the glass. Acrylic will provide a softening of light, but not directly. If you want a room to have more sunlight, then a glass skylight would be more effective, especially if you are going to be using the room often.

An acrylic skylight is a plastic type of skylight that is more convenient for either a garage or an attic. Acrylic skylights are cheaper and are resistant to shattering unlike glass, which can shatter into pieces. The Acrylic skylight would be safer in this respect if there was a storm of some kind or an earth quake for instance. Getting an acrylic skylight would be more suitable in places where there is a lot bad weather conditions. The acrylic skylight would be more suitable in this case. Glass would be a hazard, if living in a place where there is a risk of tornados. If the climate is hot, then acrylic would be better.

Also, acrylic skylights have a filmy appearance, so it is not as clear as glass. The acrylic can discolour over time too. Glass can block out noise, but not acrylic skylights. Also, acrylic skylights are of less weight, but are not as fancier in design. Glass will last much longer and is more decorative in style. There are many designs to choose from with glass. The cleaning maintenance is easier with acrylic, but there are more self-cleaning types of glass skylights these days. Some companies can provide this type of glass. So, getting advice on what you want is the first step that should be taken.
