Slavery Discovered in the US

How Many Slaves Do You Know?

Robyn Graham
Over look The problem and it it ill go away, seems to be the American way of dealing with slavery. Our collective attitude is bonded with ignorance. Americans often believe that we are finished with slavery. This could not be more wrong. We use our civil rights every day and live our lives as free. Yet, we often live near people who are held in bondage and do nothing to even slow it down . We must put the face of dehumanization in front of all Americans to see that slavery is here with us. After all, no one is free until all are free. Education as always is the first key when overcoming any bondage.

It is comforting to think that we have ended slavery in America ( The Land of the free). The day we abolished slavery may be the greatest day in American history. But, It is still here right in our back yards and most Americans don't know this. Who wants to question if the their landscaper or construction contractor has used slave labor to beautify your home. It is unthinkable and no one wants to be touched by this. Yet, our ability to turn our heads encourages human bondage. Most slaves in the United States do not speak English and therefore are often over looked as immigrants. They often seem dirty and uneducated due to their unhealthy living conditions and inability to speak English. How would we get to know anything about these apparent immigrants when we are often unable to communicate with them. Our Ignorance not theirs leaves most of us are unaware that slavery is a part of the American labor system. All of this goes on right under our free noses. A few organizations post websites full of information about The 27 million individuals who live in bondage world wide. The Media has posted spar attic exposure of this atrocity and we still overlook it. Our government seems to care yet, while legislation is in the works so many are sold, bought beaten and raped. Our disability is our ignorance.

According to The CIA 50,000 people have been trafficked into the US. Often these are women who come here with a promise of a good job. The minority are men who come here with hopes of a better life yet, are sent to work for no wages and live in unsanitary conditions.

Imagine if you lived in a third world country and you were approached with an opportunity to travel to and work as a part of the land of the free. Most of us would rejoice in the idea of being paid a fair wage. We would then be able to send money home to our families and they could be elevated into a less venerable lifestyle. Often individuals are being lured into the sex trade by the promise of the American dream. When they arrive here they are stripped of all means of survival. Never paid and sold as meat to the highest bidder. Men are sent to work while women are often sent to brothels. All are beaten into submission. Often they are afraid of the authorities because they are in our country illegally. The common lie told to them is that they are receiving a fair wage yet after their living expenses are deducted no money is left to give to them. While being bombed with justification they are without rights in this a foreign land. What would we do in their situation?

The relatively poor and ambitious are most often the victims they want so badly to prosper that they trust strangers. This sounds much like an American community college student are we not peoples without great means who take chances in order to better themselves and their families. This could happen to any of us.

In 1995, 72 peoples were found to be working 16 hours a day in a textile factory in California. They were locked in and not being paid. The labels on these clothing said made in America so who would imagine that slave labor was used in making these clothes. This factory was closed down yet how many more are still operating. How can we be sure that the clothes we are wearing are not made by humans in bondage. How can we be sure that when buying these clothes we have not put our hard earned money in The hands of slave drivers. How do we stop encouraging the beatings and rapes and inhuman living conditions. The First step is education.

We have had to work hard to overcome slavery. It left some restricting scars on America . We set the slaves free and then bound them in to a Caste system which is not completely overcome. Yet, we as Americans have much to be proud of we cant stop now while so many more changes must be implemented. We ignore that slavery is here and thriving. Slavery is different today there are no longer any Negro auctions near our town squares. Modern slaves are not bound with chains and tugged through town. Modern slaves are simply shipped in vans and buses with tinted glass and beaten in a more private setting. Many reports show that the conditions of modern slavery is worse than The former American version. Who could have thought that anything could have been worse that slavery was in The US.

As history unfolds it seem that slavery while significantly less common than before is now growing worse. The need for slave drivers to keep slaves fearing them grows greater as the world makes effort to stop slavery. The language barrier seems to be a universal tool used by slave owner. Just like when slaves were brought here from Africa the modern American slave does not speak English.

We as a people can make a difference. The first step in change is education. Become a modern abolitionist. Learn all that you can and talk about it. Bring it up at church, The office, and social gatherings encourage others to get evolved. Spread The news that slavery is alive and we buy products made with slave labor every day. Several abolitionist movements have websites and you can make donations via The web. You can buy t- shirts, hats and books that will get the attention of everyone around you. But most of all pay attention to your surrounding in order to recognize a slave when you see one. We live in a nation designed for personal freedom and we know we have not held to that ideal throughout our history yet today with research and living hearts we can put down slavery and human trafficking permanently. We can learn which products are made by slaves and boycott them. We can stand up and speak to our neighbors friends a relatives about human rights. We can organize more groups and put a stop to slavery in The United States and the world. We can write and call until our government. stops all trade with and support of slaving nations. Together we can not only make a difference for a few we can stop bondage.
