Slavery: A Potential Danger for United States Troops?

To the Winner Go the Spoils

Brooke Lorren
War is never a safe venture. When United States troops are sent off to Iraq, Afghanistan, or elsewhere, there is always the possibility that they could be injured or killed during their service. This is a risk that they willingly assume in order to preserve our freedom. Most of us never think that our servicemen and women could end up as slaves; I know that when I joined the Navy, that was not even a consideration. There is currently discussion among Moslem extremists supporting the belief that the slave trade should be resumed. While it does not seem that this practice has begun yet, if the wrong people come to power in some of the Middle Eastern countries where the governments are reorganizing themselves, it is possible that this practice could resume. This could add do the dangers to our military members, and especially female servicepersons, who, if caught, could be forced into domestic servitude by day, and sex slavery at night.

Calls for Slavery Have Been Sent Out

The call for the resumption of slavery is not just limited to an assortment of quacks that nobody listens to. It is also not a recent development. In 2009, Dr. Zakir Naik, who has his own fan site and is president of the Islamic Research Foundation (which owns the Peace TV channel of Mumbai, India), advocated sex slavery as a way to prevent fornication; according to him, it is perfectly permissible in the Koran to have sex with your slave, and that the Koran allows Moslems to take slaves as the spoils of war. Egyptian cleric Abu-Ishaq al-Huwayni stated in June 2011 that it is okay to take infidels as slaves, and that they can be taken in war. Salwa al-Mutairi, a female Moslem, also thinks that sex slavery is a good idea, because it would keep Moslem children from "falling into the abyss of fornication and similar filth" (quote was from translation into English). Many of these extremist Moslems believe that the war in Chechnya would be a perfect place to take some of these captives for slavery.

Are American Troops Safe?

When I learned about the new calls to take slaves as the spoils of war, I had to wonder if our American troops are safe. At the moment, many of our American troops that do not return home safely are injured or killed by bombs; very few are captured and taken as prisoners of war. Currently, slavery is not legal and openly practiced anywhere in the world, although it is secretly practiced in almost every country. Slavery is not legal in the Middle East right now either; however, that part of the world is very unstable, and there is a possibility that these laws forbidding slavery could change as the new governments in the region take shape. Should these laws change in the future, United States troops, as well as military forces from non-Moslem regions all around the planet, could be in danger.
