Slave-Trade Alive and Well - What Some Companies Think They Can Get Away with from Workers in New York

Slavery May Have Been Abolished Years Ago but Judging by Some of the Jobs Being Offered it Just Goes by a Different Name

So, you've been out of work for sometime. Times are tough and money is tight. All you are looking for is a fair day's work for a fair days pay. A reasonable concept wouldn't you think, and for the most part companies who post jobs in Craig list and other job-sites adhere to a reasonable standard of fairness. But there's always the bad egg in every bunch. Those jobs that have you scratching your head and saying 'How the hell do they think they can get away with asking for this?'.
Lately I found one such culprit on Craigs list, but for legal reason I shall not reveal who they are or the Craig list Job ID that is associated with the position.
But before I begin my rant here is the job as it is described in all its unaltered glory:

Production Assistant (Midtown)

Can you guess where I have a problem with this position?
Well, the Title is fine, the job description is fine, and the job requirements are fine.
Ahhhh but what's this with the hours?

1: Let's see, I should be prepared to work "AT LEAST" (their words not mine) a 9:30 - 7pm working day. Now if you factor in a 1 hour lunch break that's 8.5 hours a day. That's a 42.5 hour week, and that's "AT LEAST" 42.5 hours a week. If the lunch break is less (and it wouldn't surprise me) then the working week will be even longer. Am I going to be paid overtime for these extra 2.5 hours over the base 40 (something I believe is a legal requirement) but hey, let's not labor the point '" There's more problems to be addressed.

2: My Compensation would be 30K. So, factor in the fact that you're working "AT LEAST" 42.5 hours a week and that computes to less than 29,000.00 for a 40 hour week....pretty weak wouldn't you say, especially considering the truly AWFUL hours, which brings me to point number 3, or rather rant no. 3.

3: So, you want me to start my working day at 9:30 a.m. which is pretty late in the day from what I'm used to. For anyone used to a 9-5 job you could be forgiven for expecting the day's end to be 5:30 p.m. - but no! You are going to have to work until 7.00 p.m. "AT LEAST" - Are you getting sick of that "AT LEAST" I know I am. This is fine if you have no kids, no relationships and no life! As well as this you will be working in a "VERY" (that's their "VERY" not mine!) fast pace environment. It puts me in mind of an old 'Monty Python' sketch, wherein mine-workers have to pay mine-owner for permission to come to work before getting cut in two wit' bread-knife.

So, let's sum this all up. Low pay for too many hours, and at the end of the day you'll probably end up getting home at 8 maybe 9 O'clock. Who knows, maybe even later. Let's not forget the "AT LEAST" that this Company seems so fond of. The Slave trade may have been abolished many moons ago, but a slave-trade of another kind exists in the work-place as some companies seek to make the most of the recession and a populace who just want to survive, let alone thrive. I sincerely hope this company does not find anyone gullible or desperate enough to fulfill this position and that someone with more legal clout than I will perhaps take them to task on their truly horrendous (and possibly illegal) job listing. I think this also serves as a pertinent reminder as to why Unions exist.

  • Companies taking advantage of the recession.
  • Looking for a job - You might want to pass on this one.
  • "Did they really just say that?" Ridiculous job listing from Craigs list.
