"If you are struggling with writing you don't have to. We are here, we can work with you, we can help you develop better ways of writing and better methods of approaching writing" says Writing Center Coordinator Clint Gardner.

The Student Writing Center, located on Redwood campus in AD 218 and South City Campus in N308, are open to all Salt Lake Community College students and faculty and offer a variety of services including in-person and on-line writing tutoring and consultation.

"We work with students one on one discussing their writing. It can be any aspect or stage of the writing process. They could be struggling with an idea and don't know what to work on, they don't understand their assignment, all the way down to simple last minute things like spelling and grammar" claims Gardner.

The Student Writing Center has a very knowledgeable staff dedicated to helping students enhance their writing skills. In fact the staff is Composed of Faculty members from the English, Business Communication, and Developmental Education departments as well as current and recently graduated SLCC students with high quality writing skills. With such qualified writers on your side you are guaranteed to get the help that you need and hopefully learn something in the process. According to Gardner the Writing Center focus is on student enhancement.

"Our point is about learning. We aren't an editing service and we don't go through and fix peoples papers for them. What we do is work with student to help them learn about what they are doing and the mistakes that they are making and then help them correct those mistakes."

In-person consultations with faculty and peer-tutors at the Student Writing Center are by appointment only and last about twenty to thirty minutes. It is generally easy to get an appointment, but during peak times like mid-terms and finals it becomes difficult for the small staff to facilitate all student needs. However, the Writing Center online tool is also available twenty-four hours a day at www.slcc.edu/we/. However you get the assistance that you need is up to you, but Gardner says that it's very important that you take advantage of these consultations when writing.

"Writing is by its nature a social and communicative act being that you share it with other people and it's essential for writers to share their work with other people because it is a part of the process. Getting feedback of any kind is essential to writing."

Aside from tutoring and consultations, the Writing Center also offers other means for students and faculty such as an open computer lab in AD 230 as well as two classrooms (AD 226 and 214) dedicated solely to writing. If you need help with writing, are looking to schedule a consultation with a tutor, or are looking to become a student tutor call The Writing Center at 957-4183, visit the Redwood campus Writing Center in AD 218, or log onto www.slcc.edu/wc/.
