If you have adult ADHD, you know that at times it's hard to get to sleep and stay asleep. Following are tips and sleep advice for adult ADHD.
When you don't get enough sleep at night, not only are you more tired during the day, but if you have adult ADHD, symptoms could get worse. So how do you get to sleep and stay asleep? About three-fourths of adults with ADHD have trouble falling asleep because too much is on their minds. So the first step to falling asleep is to figure out why you're not able to fall asleep. If too much is on your mind, you may want to decide if it's something you can handle now. If not, write things down if you're worried you'll forget by morning.
If you are medications for ADHD, you may want to switch the time of day you take them. If you take them during the day but they make you drowsy, you should probably be taking them before bed. If you take them at bedtime and are having trouble falling asleep, talk to your docotr about switching these medications to morning.
Another important step to improving sleep is to get enough exercise. Exercise is important to everyone, but is especially beneficial to those with ADHD as it can help burn off some of the "nervous energy" that accumulates. Just be sure not to exercise too close to bedtime, because exercise can have stimulating effects of its own.
Try relaxation techniques to reduce stress and slow down in the evenings. Don't do anything stimulating including enjoying caffeine close to bedtime to help let your body relax to make it easier to fall asleep. Also, creating a type of bedtime ritual is helpful if you suffer from adult ADHD, as is getting up at the same time every day. This sleep advice for adult ADHD should help you to fall asleep better or maybe even give you some ideas of your own.
