There are multiple factors that one must consider when seeking the sleep apnea pillow that is right for you. Below I will review four top quality pillows using a 0-5 (worst to best scale) according to comfort, price and compliance success. The rest is up to you to decide based on your own personal needs.
The side sleeper was a fairly good beginning pillow when snoring, reflux and/or sleep apnea are an issue but not too severe. Here are the ratings: comfort 2, price 2 and compliance success 3. It denies the natural sleeping position. Though it does have some nice contouring for helping side-liers a 2 for comfort is the best I can do because I just don't like the wedge design. Price ranges from $170 upward to $300. For sure this is a high dollar amount for lesser comfort in my book. I did find if you could get used to the design of the wedge it did have beneficial effects but the comfort just wasn't enough to encourage nightly use. You can find positive reviews on the acid reflux/snore pillow at acidrefluxpillow.com, but you'll find these are older reviews.
The AXS pillow is not one I've actually slept on, but if I ever find the need to change from my current version, I may decide to give it a try. It is comfortable just to lie on and seems to be designed on sound principles. The AXIS is based on multi-density layer technology to optimize the airway opening. Comfort is a 3, not much more because I have not used one enough. For price the AXJS earns a 3 for coming in at around $130. Compliance ratings will have to be evaluated at a later date because I've yet to find testimonials on this one. However, a good plus is that there is a good chance your insurance would reimburse for this one.
One great sleep apnea pillow for anyone that is not too large (greater than 30 BMI) is the sona pillow. This pillow looks a little funny with its wave like design, but you can definitely discover a good night's sleep with this one. The hypoallergenic filling is great for anyone predisposed to particular allergies. The drawback to the sona is that it is not for you if you have severe sleep apnea or you are a large person. If you fit into the criteria of not too large, do not have severe sleep apnea but have problems with snoring or slight apnea give the sona a try. For comfort they get a strong 4, price of $129 earns a 3 because of the quality and allergy consideration. For the compliance factor I believe the sona will give you plenty of comfort and deserve a solid 4 here also.
My favorite for comfort, price and compliance is the C-PAP sleep apnea pillow. Designed for all phases of comfort, the velour and silky coverings allow for softness and repositioning throughout the night. The contoured design really works well because your CPAP mask and hose stay out of the way, pressure doesn't make your face swish up and cause leaks. This leads to increased compliance because you are not disturbed by the mask or the pillow, you wake up more refreshed and feeling better every day. Comfort is a 5, price a 5+ with a sleep apnea pillow $60 price ticket and compliance a 5 because it's much easier to stick with than most of the ones I've tried.
Best of luck and happy sleeping
