For many adults, the complications of sleep disorder often result in a visit with a healthcare professional. This medical visit usually ends with the healthcare professional prescribing a sleep aid, anti-depressant, or some other form of prescription medication, in an effort to improve quality and length of sleep.
While pharmaceuticals are effective at alleviating many sleep disorders, it is important to understand, also, the impact your gender may have upon your disturbed sleep patterns. While a particular form of sleep therapy may work for your spouse that same form of sleep therapy may not work for you.
For example, many men experience sleep complications in direct relation to stress or complications with gastrointestinal complications. In women, the sleep disturbance, in many cases, is related to hormonal fluctuations and menstrual cycles. In fact, women are more likely to experience long term sleep complications for this reason.
The time at which sleep patterns in men and women become more closely connected is during the latter years of life. With age, and after hormonal imbalances are no longer a significant factor, men and women begin to experience a greater degree of sleep patterns that are likeness to one another. Sleeping through the night becomes a concern as does the sudden tendency to fall asleep during the day. While you may have required distinct and separate sleep therapy when you were younger, as you pass into the years of retirement, you may find your sleep pattern is equally as disturbed as that of your partner.
When considering your irregular sleep patterns and tendency towards insomnia, your healthcare professional should make every effort to tailor your treatment program to the needs based upon your gender. Where women may require support from a hormonal perspective, men often require support through stress management and anti-depressant usage. In managing your sleep irregularities in this fashion, you can create a better quality of sleep to your specific health complication.
Not all sleep remedies are equal. While many physicians are inclined to prescribe the same sleeping aids to both male and female patients, the best way to resolve sleep disorder is through a gender-specific program that is designed to cater to your specific health status. In doing so, you can obtain better relief than had you utilized the sleep remedy that your spouse is using.
