What is not commonly known is that sleep disorders are not restricted to insomnia and narcolepsy. In fact, many sleep disorders include a variety of sleep disturbances in between the two spectrum's including excessive sleep and abnormal sleep behaviors such as restless leg syndrome and grinding of the teeth, also known as bruxism. In recent years, further research has expanded into the sleep disorders of sleepwalking, night or sleep terror and REM behavior disorder.
Sleep disorder diagnosis and treatment is quite common among most hospitals. In Dallas, the Sleep Center of Baylor provides the necessary diagnostic tools, comprehensive programs and treatment options to the sleep deprived patients. When symptoms persist over a two to three week period, treatment through the Sleep Center of Baylor may be the key to resuming a normal sleeping schedule.
Diagnosing a sleep disorder is quite simple. While some studies require an overnight stay at the sleep center facility, most testing is done on an outpatient basis and in the comfort of the patient's home. Testing such as CPAP, which measures the airway pressure, nocturnal seizure monitoring and nocturnal polysonography are just a few of the options available to the sleep deprived patient through the services at the Sleep Center of Baylor.
In addition to standard testing, and before making treatment recommendations, the Sleep Center of Baylor will intake a full medical history of the sleep deprived patient. With this medical history, the staff of the Sleep Center of Baylor may offer dietary or medication modifications in an effort to improve the outcome of the treatment program. Such modifications might include eliminating caffeine, alcohol, medications and smoking. Eliminating daytime napping, modifying work schedules and reducing levels of stress and anxiety may also be promoted as part of the treatment program. It is also important to note that obese individuals as well as individuals with a small stature, or even organic brain disorders, may exhibit more difficulty in obtaining optimal and normal sleep patterns.
For the three Sleep Center of Baylor locations, Garland, Dallas and Grapevine, the primary focus for each patient is to provide the most appropriate treatment while working to achieve the optimal sleep outcome.
