Sleep Inn Universal Studios: A Balanced Review

Sleep Inn Universal Studios
Neighborhood: Universal Studios
Orlando, FL 32819
United States of America
Located within walking distance of Universal's main gate, the Sleep Inn Universal Studios is the world's largest Sleep Inn. Towering ten stories into the air, this hotel is easily seen from the interstate and the surrounding area. A more upscale property than most of this chain, the hotel is adequate for a short stay.

Check-in and check-out: The check in and check out times are the normal 3:00pm and 11:00am; both were easy and relatively quick. It is wise to book early, because the hotel is sold out often during the busy seasons. The staff was always friendly and helpful, although one sometimes had to ring a bell for assistance.

Rooms: The rooms were some of the smallest I've ever seen. The beds were small, and there was very little floor space. Even the bathroom was about airplane size! If you're staying for more than three nights, I recommend looking elsewhere-the cramped quarters would become very tedious after several nights. Combined with this and the fact that many rooms required a long elevator ride, I would probably say that the rooms were some of the worst I've experienced.

Cleanliness and quality: Although it wasn't disgusting, our room wasn't spotless, and could have used a thorough cleaning. The beds, blankets, and other appointments were in need of attention and in some cases broken. The bathroom door wouldn't close properly, and a room across from ours had to have its lock fixed during our stay! Overall, the furnishings were of relatively low quality.

Food: This hotel lacks a restaurant, but offers a continental breakfast and large breakfast room. Breakfast didn't start until about seven o'clock-not a wise decision for a hotel who hosts many theme park goers. The breakfast was better than in many hotels-doughnuts, rolls, and everything continental in-between was provided. Service at breakfast could have been better, and some items were no longer available later in the morning.

Other perks: Free wireless internet was provided, but it only worked in the unrefurbished rooms. However, those whose rooms did not support wireless internet could use that in the lobby. The lobby also featured two computers for public use, one of which didn't work for most of our stay. Additionally, a desk in the lobby proclaimed to sell Universal tickets, but was rarely staffed. A small outdoor pool is located off the side of the hotel, and was often in use. Free parking is provided for the duration of your stay.

Overall, this hotel was acceptable for a shorter stay; it was suitable as a place to spend the night. I'm sure there are much nicer hotels in the area, but apart from the small rooms, I would recommend that anyone stay here to visit Universal Orlando. For the budget-minded traveler, the Sleep Inn Universal Studios provides the perfect jumping-off point for a visit to the Universal Orlando Resort.
