Sleep Masks and Ear Plugs Can Aid in Peaceful Sleep and Study

Roommate Relations 101

D. S. Ploshay
Many first year college students may be cohabiting for the first time, while upper level students are returning to campus, perhaps in a new dorm with a new roommate. Either way, living in such close quarters with a roommate can mean the occasional schedule conflict. Sometimes one student may wish to nap, while the other is doing work. One may want to stay up late watching a movie, while the other hits the sack early. Or, someone may want to study while the other has invited a few friends over for a Wii session.

Part of the fun at college is being social and meeting people. And, often, the first person one meets is his or her roommate -- and very frequently, this person becomes a lifelong friend. But, when it comes to the day to day, the biggest complaint between roommates is often "so-and-so is too loud" or "so-and-so stays up so late." Earplugs and sleeping eye masks can be a great item to have in a college dorm room or apartment. Whether it is something used daily and nightly, or just as needed, any college student should consider investing in these sleep aids. Here are a few uses for earplugs and sleep masks for college students.

Sleep masks for college students

There are several uses for eye masks for college students: sleeping, napping, relaxing.

Sleep masks for napping -- Roommates will likely have different sleeping habits that center around just as different class, sports and extra-curricular activities. When one roommate wants to take a nap between these commitments, the other roommate may wish to be in the room eating, studying, reading or doing something else. Using a sleep mask can shield either the daylight or interior lighting, or both.

Sleep masks for sleeping -- Just like napping, a college student can use a sleep mask to keep the room as dark as can be. Maybe the roommate likes to fall asleep watching a movie on their laptop. Sure, they are using earphones, but the picture could still be a distraction. Also, if wake times are different, a sleep mask can shield out the early flip of the switch when the other roommate wakes up.

Sleep masks for relaxing -- Sometimes lying down and unwinding - perhaps meditating - is nice at the end of the day, and can help energize before evening activities. A scented sleep mask can help calm someone during a resting period. These mental breaks in the darkness can be a great relief, with or without sleep.

Earplugs for college students

Like sleep masks, earplugs, such as the ones from Mack's Earplugs, can help keep roommate relations in check, and perhaps ear plugs have mores uses than sleep masks. Let's take a look.

Earplugs for studying -- Studying is an important part of college. But, in today's society, focusing can sometimes be difficult. When studying in a common area such as a dorm room, or even in a larger common area on campus like a coffee shop, earplugs can help drown out sound. Wearing earplugs while studying can help a student stay focused on their notes and books.

Earplugs for napping -- As mentioned above, busy college students may often wish to nap between classes and activities - or even sleep in past when a roommate wakes up. Just like a sleep mask will keep the napper in darkness, foam earplugs can drown out regular noises made by a roommate (or down the hall!).

Earplugs for sleeping -- Earplugs can also help drown out snores from a roommate. Earplugs for sleeping can also help one slip into slumber faster, as these foam pieces fade out any music, television or computer sounds -- or even conversations.

Earplugs for student musicians -- Foam earplugs are not just great for sleeping or studying, but can also be great to have on hand if involved in a band. In 2010, CBS News aired a report about hearing loss in teens which featured a high school student suffering from minor hearing loss from playing in her school band. Wearing noise-reducing earplugs during practice and performance can certainly help lessen the risk.

Earplugs for concerts and other social events -- This may not be a first thought when it comes to wearing foam earplugs, but wearing a pair to an off-campus concert or other event that would produce loud noise can help prevent any hearing loss, too.

Sleeping masks and earplugs can be a welcome accessory to any dorm room or college apartment. Shielding unwanted light and drowning out unwanted noise can help roommates keep the (literal) peace.
