Sleep More by Eating the Right Foods

Why These Foods Help You Get More Sleep

Rosa Hayes
Did you know that there are certain foods that help you get more sleep and there are also foods that you should avoid for better sleep? We go through our day eating but we may have never realized that this may be what is keeping us up at night. Through my research of trying to figure out what foods help a person sleep and what keeps them up I have found many different foods that you could be eating today to help you get a good night's sleep.

Milk

You may have thought that milk was an old wives tale to try and get their young to drink more of it but did you know that it has tryptophan that also helps promote sleep? The next time you can't get enough sleep, try drinking a glass of milk before bed. On smaller kids a warm glass of milk might do the trick to help them drift off to dreamville. According to WebMD.com there are also many other foods that contain the substance tryptophan such as oats, bananas, poultry, and honey.

Carbohydrates

Carbohydrates can actually help foods that contain tryptophan rich foods. Foods that are good to eat to help you sleep better are cereal with milk, yogurt and crackers, or bread and cheese. These foods are all good for you and are great for a night time snack to help you get more sleep. If you decide to eat carbohydrates you should avoid those that are rich in sugar since it can actually keep you from getting proper sleep.

Snacking before bedtime

Most doctors don't recommend eating past seven in p.m. since you probably won't get enough exercise to work off the extra calories but a light snack before bedtime might be what you actually need to help you sleep. If you are hungry then you might suffer from hunger induced insomnia but if you tend to eat a lot before bed then you might want to limit this to a light snack so that you still feel full but aren't full enough to cause your digestive system any disturbance.

Eat better

Sure eating better is good for your health but did you know that it could also help you to get a good night's sleep? High fat foods and foods high in sugar can keep you awake long after you need to go to sleep. Eat a well balanced meal and exercise properly and you too could be on your way to sleeping better.
