The first costume idea is a precious little lamb. I made this costume for my oldest when she was 1 week old and it kept her warm in her swing while I passed out candy opening the door constantly. All you need is a white sleeper, a white baby hat or bonnet, a piece of white felt, and a piece of pink felt. ( felt can be found in the craft section of any store with a craft section and only costs about 20-30 cents each.)
Depending on the size of your little one, you will need to cut out 2 tear shape pieces of white felt for ears( for a new born, I would say 1-1 1/2" long ). Then cut out a long tear shaped piece from white felt for a tail ( for a new born I would say about 2-3" long, but only about 1" wide ). Use the pink felt as the inside of the ears. Just remember to make them a little smaller than the white pieces. For the ears, place the pink on the white and pinch one side to the other to create a crease, then sew one or two stitches to keep it in that shape. Sew or safety pin to each side of hat or bonnet. ( you can remove the stitches later) Then you just need to pin or stitch the tail on the butt of the sleeper. Add a little black nose out of makeup for older babes.
The second costume is a puppy, made the same as the lamb, only you'll not want to use any pink for the ears, and they will need to be significantly larger. You can use white black or brown sleepers and felt. You can also use white and paint black or brown spots on it. For the tail, you will just cut the felt in a rectangle about 4" long or so and about 3/4" wide.
The third, and my favorite is the clown. You can be so creative with this one. You will need multiple colors of bingo markers, or multi colored large pom-poms ( the little fuzzy looking balls found in the craft section) a hot glue gun for babies that wont pull them off or eat them (or needle and thread for those that will), a sleeper and hat of whatever color you choose, anything else that might go well with the clown theme. Just place bingo marker spots or pom-poms all over sleeper and hat, pon-poms are great at the tip of the hat and on the tops of the feet. Maybe a spot of red on the nose for older babes.
There are many more easy costumes to be made with sleepers for babies. I hope these have been enough to give ideas and get your own creativity thinking on it. Have a safe Halloween.
