Sleepless Dreamer

Adrienne D. Poole
I fell asleep last night

Lids half closed shuttered against

Afterthoughts of who I had wounded

During day left injured on the battlefield

Of life when words cut in the vein

Sheathed blade unexpectedly pain

My hero sun left without twilight to bounce

Off of the moon so I wondered

If I called upon her higher powers enough

To cast out the demons that invade my

Open spirit especially at darkness

You see I don't slumber like babies

I drift from wakefulness to unconsciousness

Back to nothingness and when my will speaks

I listen straining to hear what words or riddles or

Poem and puzzles I must resolve to solve and fix

So I preserve the armor they bestowed me

Delirium, fantasy that's what I am present with

Beautiful slumber eludes I am not customary

Do not collectively drift with us Mary

Because they are resting on preparations

Manufactured to take away our suffering

I prefer the retribution seraph

If I fall and lay my head

Soothingly when I nap

I fell asleep last night
