Slightly Stoopid and Cypress Hill Reach New Heights

Reggae and Hip-Hop Meet Up for a Blazing Summer Party

David Carr
The opening night of the Legalize It tour hit The Verizon Wireless Amphitheater in Irvine California this week, and it looks to be the feel good party for the months of July and August. The tour features suburban reggae/punkers Slightly Stoopid teamed with veteran hip-hop group Cypress Hill. The two groups share a love and political agenda when it comes to the legalization of marijuana and they might just see their wish for legalization come true.

Reggae artist Collie Buddz got the party started with a set of traditional reggae music. Like most reggae artists Collie hit the audience with some classic old school reggae sounds, a bit of dancehall and then the typical Bob Marley cover. After a brief dj set, Cypress Hill took command of the stage. The "Hill" has endured the test of time and has become the Grateful Dead of hip-hop. Rappers B Real and Sen Dog, backed by dj Julio G. and percussionist Eric Bobo went through some of their biggest hits and also delivered cuts off of their latest disc "Rise Up". The group also expounded on their true love and affection for cannabis with a medley of their best known tunes that pay tribute to the green leafy substance. This set the stage for Slightly Stoopid.

The only criticism one may have for the San Diego, suburban reggae group is that their studio discs can't seem to capture the laid back party vibe of their live shows. Slightly Stoopid may not be breaking any new ground but they do provide the perfect soundtrack to a typical southern California night. With a little punk and hard rock thrown into their reggae mix and some choice words about their favorite herb, The Legalize It Tour has the makings of one of the best parties to attend this summer.

I made it to the show on Friday, the article is right "nothing ground breaking" but its fun as hell to listen to and I think the 13,000 other people at the show would agree. Rock on!
