SlimShots Diet: Hype or Easy Appetite Suppressant?

What a concept. At breakfast you open a tiny pod the size of a coffee creamer, but instead of adding it to your coffee--you drink it. Its only 20 calories and within a couple of hours you're not hungry. Within days you are eating 30% less. In a perfect world, this would be an amazing way to lose weight quickly and safely without feeling hungry. But, do we live in a perfect world?

According the Slim Shots website, they work by triggering the Ileal brake which makes you feel artificially full even if you haven't eaten. According to an independent article Real brake: a sensible food target for appetite control. A review. published in Physiology & Behavior, when undigested nutrients reach the ileum (the last section of the small intestine) it triggers this brake effect which causes you to feel full. One could surmise the natural reason for this response is that when you've eaten enough food that any of it remains undigested by the time it reaches that portion of your intestines, you've eaten too much and your body tells you to stop.

So these little shots of natural oat and palm oil are designed to remain undigested all the way to the end of your small intestine, where they trick your body into telling you that you've eaten & don't need to eat anymore. In a perfect world, this would cause you to eat less if the reason you eat is due to hunger.

However, this begs the question: "What if you're eating for another reason?" Just in speaking to friends trying to lose weight, I've noticed a trend of emotional eaters. The extra calories that causes them to gain weight are rarely due to actual hunger. They eat because they are sad, bored, or just not paying attention to what they are doing. They eat because they normally eat that much at that time, not because they are even hungry.

With its only ingredients palm oil, oat, water, vanilla flavor and artificial sweetener, you could expect that there are no side effects to taking Slim Shots. This isn't a diet pill that will pump you up with caffeine and keep you awake at night. For this reason alone, there is very little you can say against such a diet aid.

This product can be very useful for controlling hunger and getting a handle on caloric intake--however this is only a tool towards improved health. Analyzing & noticing your eating patterns and attempting to remove any non hunger eating from your diet would be an even bigger step towards weight loss & good health. As with all diets, its best to consult a doctor prior to beginning.
