Slumdog Millionaire and Oscars Awards 2008
Controversial Article About Glorifying Slumdog Millionaire
Thanks to Dannie Boyle, the Indian casting crew got their share of glory due to Slumdog Millionaire. Thanks to Dannie Boyle who marvelously ridiculed Mumbai and its lifestyle. He glorified every single hating part of Mumbai. He wonderfully showcased that Mumbai and India is only about slums and poor people. Mumbai is only about kidnappings, Mafia, poverty, child abuse, lost dreams and people without hope. He magnanimously showcased that only one can rise after fighting all the odds and what an achievement it is? Thanks to Dannie Boyle who has inscribed Mumbai on the pages of history for being a city of poor people and those who live a life no more than insects.
Now there is something that leaves me wondering....?
Will Dannie Boyle or any British will make a movie on someone in New York or may be someone in Italy or Austria who had faced the wrath of economic downturn. There are thousands ...no millions of people around the world whose lives have changed forever. They are living the life of uncertainty. Something even worse than death. Those who died in 9/11 in the US or on 26/11 in Mumbai have nothing to worry. Their families and loved ones know that there is something that cannot be undone. But there are thousands of people who are still living and facing a horrifying situation back home. They are facing every day hell because some powerful people around the world made mistakes and now they are out of jobs. Some of them have even committed suicides due to their problems. Some have had heart attacks, some have had strokes. These people are living a nightmare each day and they will continue to live that nightmare for next several years.
Dannie Boyle showed lives of only few people to showcase the whole Mumbai. Will there by any British director or an American Director who will mark history glorifying the mistakes of the Western World and their economic stupidities. How the chief financial decision makers of the world have brought the economies to the doom. Will Dannie Boyle or Steven Spielberg ever portray that there are people worrying about their child's education, they home repayments, their retirement options. Will they stand at the Oscar ceremony some day because they has the creativity to bring out the biggest folly made by the West.
There have been people around the world, some powerful people who though that that rule the world economies, they had the power to turn the markets, they had the power to change the productions and sales and they had the great political powers to move the masses! These people led the world on the brink of the collapse. These people have done greater damage to the world and innocent people than the all the terrorists around the world put together. 9/11 killed 6000 people and changed the lives of hundreds of people forever. These powerful people living the "Developed Countries", these powerful people who did not see the financial avalanche coming down have ruined the lives of many forever.
They said "General Motors is too Big to Die." What's happening to General Motors now? What is happening to Toyota or Honda? Will anyone in Hollywood bring out that yes we were the people responsible for the crying world today.
This is all about the current situation but for decades American has had hidden racism. They rejoiced when Barrack Obama became the first Black American President. There is hidden racism everywhere. Have you heard of "Skinheads" in Europe especially Russia? There is a dark side of every country and every human being. There are two sides of everything in the world but glorifying someone's darker side to glorify your personality is really not commendable. To denounce the darker side to claim the most coveted position in the world is really not acceptable.
The social message going out from the movie is something that is very objectionable. Dannie Boyle had been a true British to depict in India in such form and make a name for himself. That's what British did all the years in India and all the colonies they ruled worldwide. They exploited the goodness and left the colonies to rot in poverty. Dannie Boyle once again endorsed the basic psychology.
Arguments are doing rounds that it is the story of a boy who became a hero against all odds. But is it really so? Is the world really watching the movie to see the struggle of the boy or is the world watching the movie to see the poverty and other grotesque, hair-raising life-style of Mumbai. Be honest to answer? There are thousands of movies till date and thousands will be made in future that will depict one man's struggle against all odds but will they all get 8 Oscars?
The article is not against the movie or the actors but against the screenplay and all those who secretly endorsed that India - "The Sleeping Elephant" who has till now sustained the economic downturn is nothing more than poverty striken land full of snakes and people wearing lion's skin. What makes me wonder is that will there be any movie or any British who will ever glorify the IT industry in India, Indian workmen on whom the world depends upon for their BPOs, the largest English speaking work force that is capable of multi-tasking. Will someone ever glorify and will the Academy ever give 8 Oscars to a movie glorifying India. They did not endorse "Lagaan". Just wondering if they did not choose that movie because it represented the stronger Indian side? The side which showed that Indian ridiculed the British?
Will there be someone looking at their own shoes and the holes in it? ... Just wondering?
