Sly Cooper and the Thievius Raccoonus - a PS2 Game Review

Walter Kovacs
Sly Cooper and the Thievius Raccoonus is a fantastic game for the Playstation 2. It has theft, a good plot, and a busty Fox named Carmelita. What else could a guy want in a video game?

The story line of this game is that Sly's family, which goes back for centuries, created a book with all the secrets of thievery in it. When Sly was a kid, the book was stolen by the Fiendish Five, a gang of five thieves. The thieves killed Sly's mother and father. Sly was moved into an orphanage where he met Murray and Bentley. These grew up to become the greatest band of thieves ever. But Sly and his friends were very different from the Fiendish Five. Sly and his friends stole for honor and glory. They stole money from criminals, and arranged for the police to pick them up after the job was done. Sly and his gang were vigilantes.

So, sly and his gang go on a mission to recover parts of the Thievius Raccoonus. They know that each member of the five has part of it, and that if they take down each of them, they will be able to retrieve the book. Sly also wants to get back at Clockwork, the leader of the Fiendish Five, for killing his parents.

Carmelita Fox, on the other gang, wants to capture Sly and his gang. She is a police agent detective who travels the globe to try to find Sly. She somehow gets mixed in to this madness.

The levels of this game are very interesting. There are seven levels for each Boss (a member of the 5). In each level, you need to find 7 keys. Once you have these keys, you can face off against the boss. If you defeat him, you get his piece of the book. Each piece of the book you find teaches you a new move.

The graphics of this game are nice. Though they are pretty blocky and uneven, they are very colorful, and they make the game more vibrant. You turn on your TV, and you are in a night club. You actually feel like you are there. The game programmers were smart enough to turn up the volume of the game when you enter loud rooms. This makes you feel like you are actually standing there besides Sly.

The game play is also a lot of fun. As you progress in the game, Sly and his friends learn new and better moves for being stealthy and taking on the bad guys. Moving around is simple. All you need is the control stick Attacking is also easy a simple attack with Sly's cane requires a tap of the circle button on the controller. More advanced attacks need the use of more buttons. For example, a spinning dive requires a double jump, followed by a quick tap of the triangle of the apex of your flight.

This game may be old, but it is a classic, you can probably pick up a copy for only a couple of bucks on EBay, and for only around 10 dollars MSRP. I would rate this game an. 9 out of 10. I love it and I hope you will too.
