Small Business Grants for Women

Drew Graham
Getting a grant is an excellent way to get money to start a new business. This is especially true for women since the government has set aside billions of dollars specifically to help women start a business. In fact there is so much grant money available that a whole business has developed to sell information on where to find grant money.

Finding grants can be a frustrating experience simply because there are so many of them available. Making it even more difficult is that there are so many different sources of grants, they are all administered by different government agencies. Another problem is that the grants all have different eligibility criteria, and many are location specific, or intended for a specific type of business. All of this can make it difficult to sort through all of the available grants in order to find the ones you qualify for. Research is the key here, you will have to really research the available grants.

The small business administration in your state will likely offer a variety of grants to women who are starting their own business. Again these grants will take some research to find them, your best bet is to go to your state's web site and search under business assistance benefits. There you should find information on the grants available from the federal, state and local government as well as private sector grants.

One source of grant funding that is available to female business owners is the Amber Grant. These are small grants of up to one thousand dollars that can be used to help pay for the many small expenses that come along when starting a business.

Applying for a grant can be a frustrating experience because there are usually quite a few hoops to jump through. The important thing is to have a clear idea of how much money you need to start your business and how that money will be spent. You will probably need to submit a business plan so it's a good idea to have one written up before you start looking for grants

Money, in the form of grants and credit, is available to women in business. Many of the loans are subprime and easy to acquire with a better than decent repayment plan. And though you won't qualify for every grant, the odds are good you'll qualify for a few of them.
