When you open up a new business, there seems to be tons of insurances that the small business owner has to slog through on a daily basis. There are many insurances that it seems a small business owner would not need; however, self employed liability insurance is that one insurance you can't afford not to have. Shop around and see what policy or company is the right one for you. Make sure to ask your insurance agent what kind of coverage it is, what options you have when someone hurts themselves in your store, and be realistic in your own mind as to what you can let slide or what you can't. Cutting costs is the name of the game in a small business, but this should not be where it is done.
Self employed liability insurance is an insurance that will help you when something happens in your store. If a person in your store, even a good friend, slips and falls, or decides to mess with something in the wrong way, and he gets hurt there is a case that every lawyer who wants to make a name for himself would love to grab. the lawyers are on their way. Remember, when a person gets hurt on the grounds of your business, you're responsible. Many people say they wouldn't dream of hurting you, till they are hurt. Unfortunately, the world is getting more and more sue happy. It's beet to side on the side of caution.
Think back to the many time you've heard comments such as "hit me, I need the money", "mess up so I can sue you and become rich", or "I wish I did slip, so I could retire and be rich" It's scary to think so many people are that predatory, but the small business owner is the prey of these comments and actions. Think back, or better yet, research the many frivolous law suits that have been fought where the person who was doing the suing won. A few of the more prominent cases is the "McDonald's hot coffee", "McDonald's hot pickle", "Too many red m and m's" to just name a few point out how important your business' protection should to you.
In the end, this is a very important decision to make, and a much needed expense in creating the corporate machine you envision. You don't want to guess what will happen, or guess if you're covered, or guess if the extra expenses of courts and filing fees will put you out of business. Ask as many questions as you can, and be your own advocate for your business. Get the insurance that is best for your business, and how it operates.

Post a CommentI work for a mid-sized insurance company in Canada. I would suggest Liability insurance is the bare minimum and often only satisfies a lease.
The key to any liability policy is the extensions and exclusions. To start with there are the General Exclusions, which every policy will exclude. From there there are additional exclusions such as Sports Participant, Products and Completed Operations. If you're looking for full coverage you need to ensure none of these exclusions impact your business.
Next is property coverage, which covers property owned by you or in your care custody and control. Again, the inclusions and exclusions are key here and will determine how far your coverage goes.
The best way to ensure you have the proper coverage at the right price is to build a good relationship with your broker and provide as much information as possible. A good Description Of Operations goes a long way to helping your broker (and insurer) understand what you do and what they're coverin
