Nearly every business has a logo that serves as a visual mark for the business. A logo may simply be a well-designed collection of letters that make up the company's name, or the logo could be a symbol of the business, such as the famous Nike check. The purpose of a logo is to provide a moniker for the business that can be used to represent the business in a variety of applications.

It is important for businesses to have a logo because the logo helps to provide an air of professionalism and completeness. Most businesses include their logos in all of their marketing materials, including their Web sites, letterhead, envelopes, and other business communications. The logo should be a symbol for the business that is easily recognizable and associated with a company.

In order to get a logo for a business, the business will most likely need to hire a graphic designer in order to develop the logo. Many graphic designers will review a company's business plan and consult with the business leaders to learn as much about the business as possible before sitting down to develop a logo. Graphic designers often also provide businesses with several different logo drafts to choose from.

The process of designing a logo can take some time, as business leaders and graphic designers need to work together to determine what appropriate colors, looks, and general aesthetics should be for the logo. Some businesses prefer to have a logo that symbolically represents a business, such as a coffee bean for a coffee house. Other businesses may prefer to have a logo that only includes the business name. There is no one correct way to design a logo for a business. However, the logo colors should be the same as the "theme" colors for a business.

In order to find a graphic designer that can create the logo for a business, the business should think about other business logos in order to determine what their preferred style is. After a business determines what, in general, its logo should look like, the business can select a graphic designer with the right skills. For example, some graphic designers specialize in corporate style while other graphic designers provide more "artsy" designs.

Once the business has found several different graphic designers that have designed logos that are similar in style to what the business is looking for, the business can narrow down its selection based on price, the number of drafts that are included in the initial price, and the rights that the business will have when using the logo.

It is important for businesses to keep in mind that they need to have ownership of the full rights to use a logo. Some graphic designers will design a logo, but retain some rights to the logo. For example, a graphic designer may design a logo for use on letterhead and business cards, but may not authorize a business to use that logo on a Web site or other marketing materials. Therefore, it is important for businesses to have a solid contract in place with logo designers that ensures that the business has full rights to use the logo in any manner it desires.

Because the logo is so important for the overall image of a business, it is important for businesses to be sure that they are completely satisfied with the final logo before using it in their marketing materials. It's better to have the right logo in the beginning than to have to change logos down the road.
