Small Business Profile: Solutions Acne and Skin Care of Johnson City, Tennessee

Carol Ryland, LE, knew as soon as she finished esthetics school that she did not want to pamper people at some day spa. Instead, she wanted to really help people, especially those with problem skin. As a result, she decided to open her own business dedicated to treating both young people and adults, who were plagued by acne. She found Laura Cooksey, an esthetician in San Leandro, California, who developed the skin care line Face Reality. This is the protocol for treating all grades of acne, and the product line that Carol decided to carry in her own shop. Carol also traveled to California to continue her education under Laura, who became Carol's mentor and is still such to this day. After finishing her training in acne care, Carol returned to Johnson City, Tennessee, to open her own business -- Solutions Acne and Skin Care -- in October of 2009.

Carol notes that treating acne involves much more than just "smearing on the latest over-the-counter topical cream or snagging a prescription for antibiotics from a dermatologist." OTC medications are simply not strong enough to effectively treat acne. Most dermatologists (and pediatricians) usually only prescribe medications that treat "flare-ups" and which are only a temporary solution to the problem. Carol, on the other hand, believes in individual care. She wants to stay in touch with her clients. She wants to know how their skin is reacting to the treatments. This includes staying in touch between office visits in case a change needs to be made in their treatment. In other words, Carol is dedicated to finding a lasting solution to a client's acne problem. Carol observes: "Some skin types and conditions can get noticeable results in just several days and get totally clear in just a couple of weeks." Fewer than 10% of the cases are more difficult to treat; however, Carol will help even these individuals get their acne under control. (By the way, Carol also offers some anti-aging skin care; however, her focus is on the treatment of acne.)

Carol carries, as mentioned earlier, Laura Cooksey's Face Reality products, which were developed in conjunction with Dr. James Fulton, a specialist and long-time researcher in the area of acne. In addition, she has a few of the products by PCA (Physician's Care Alliance), with the rest of their line being available by special order.
