Small Business Saturday: Shop Your Local Retailers on November 26th

Sandy James

As millions of Americans across the nation are getting ready to celebrate Thanksgiving, millions of small shop owners are also gearing up for their annual celebration. The Saturday after Thanksgiving has been designated as Small Business Saturday and this year marks it's 2nd annual event.

The idea of Small Business Saturday is for residents across the country to visit their local shops and support them by purchasing from these retailers. Small businesses find it hard to compete with large retailers such as JCPenney and Walmart as well as the internet. Some of these small shops are "Mom & Pop" shops that have been in business for years but are finding it increasingly difficult to compete with the internet and survive our current economy.

This Saturday, November 26th, my husband and I plan on visiting a few local shops and having lunch at one of our local restaurants. The weather is supposed to be warm and nice so it'll be a good time to get our and walk around and support our local retailers.

Small Business Saturday is supported by many organizations, businesses, and politicians. You can find a list of them here. The concept of Small Business Saturday started with American Express last year as they encouraged shoppers to get out and support their local small shops which are the backbone of this country. Shopping at local small retailers will help the local economy and when local economies grow, so does the nation.

American Express is also encouraging you to shop locally on Small Business Saturday by offering a one-time $25 statement credit to its customers with a valid American Express Card. There are some terms and conditions that apply and you can read about that by clicking on American Express. To read more about this event, go to the Small Business Saturday Facebook page.

This Saturday, take the pledge to join other Americans by supporting your small local businesses. Shop your local retailers November 26th to support your community and Small Business Saturday.

Happy shopping!

We tried to shop our local small businesses downtown- and they were all closed at 3 in the afternoon! Oi vay- :) We did however get to shop at a local shoe store that is moving business to a larger town- does that count? I love the concept, tho- I hope to shop at our local stores next year, maybe they didn't get the memo?

I wrote an Editorial for our newspaper about the bonus of shopping local. Every dollar spent locally circulates thru the local economy 7 - 10 times. Amazing. cheers ;)
