Small Master Bedrooms in Historical Homes: Turn a Small Bedroom into a Master Suite

Don't you just love the charm of older/historical homes? The great architecture and quality craftmanship make them appealing to consumers even today. Nevertheless, there are many downfalls to buying an historical home. One of those downfalls is that there is no master suite. Although you get many other charms, you'll have to typically forfeit the square footage in your master bedroom, give up the master bath and the walk in closets. With a little creativity however, you can give your older home's master bedroom a "suite" touch.

1. Add Closet Space - Unless closet space has been added, every master bedroom in an older home will lack. Older homes were designed with fewer closets because they simply didn't need as much closet space as we need today. You can add closet space by purchasing a wardrobe or multi-function armoire. These come in beautiful cherry wood with lovely ornamentation, or more contemporary styles like metal fronts. You can also provide more storage by purchasing a bed with drawers underneath.

2. Make A Sitting and/or Reading Area - What makes for a master suite is having more than just a sleeping area. Although you may have less space in your bedroom, this can still be done. Put a small chair and lamp in the corner to make for a reading area, make a window seat, or add a romantic bench at the foot of the bed. If you have space, go for a chaise lounge dressed with a lovely throw.

3. Add Special Touches to Your Bathroom - Although you may not have a master bathroom per se, you can still add personal touches to the bath to make it feel like one. First off, if your bathroom is near your master bedroom, try color coordinating the rooms. If your colors are brown and burgundy in your bathroom, go with brown and burgundy in your master bedroom. Purchase accessories in pairs like candles, art or even light fixtures. Add personal touches to the bathroom with monogrammed towels and/or monogrammed robes.

4. Incorporate a Touch of Luxury - Nothing makes for a "suite" like that spa feeling. Go for fresh flowers, scented candles, lots of pillows and soft throws in the room. Shop for elegant bedding like silk sheets and duvet covers. If you go with monogrammed towels in the bathroom, consider embroidered bed linens.

Many people opt for major renovations to get a master suite in their historical home. They may take two bedrooms and make them into a master suite, or even convert the attic into a master suite. But these simple steps take minimal effort and a minimal investment. Happy Decorating.
