Smallville will be back for a 10th season. In a surprise by CW, they renewed Smallville for its 10th season, citing key demographic ratings that are continuing to bring in money to the network through advertising. The show has become quite the success story for first the WB and now CW, and it just continues to churn out episodes that fans have really come to love more and more each season. According to Entertainment Weekly, total viewership numbers for the 18-49 demographic is up 75 percent, meaning that the show is still gaining viewers, and made it worthy of coming back for at least one more season on CW.

Smallville debuted way back in 2001 and has really created a new history for the Superman pathos. Covering the characters before they made it to the stages in the comic books, it first covered the high school years of Clark Kent, and has slowly evolved into him accepting his role as a hero. Tom Welling (Kent) has really made a name for himself with this show, and despite many rumors over the years that he would be leaving the show, he has helped steer Smallville to almost 200 episodes on television now. He has had a good supporting cast with him over the years as well, including Allison Mack (Chloe Sullivan), Kristin Kreuk (Lana Lang), and Michael Rosenbaum (Lex Luthor) just to name a few.

There hasn't been an announcement about whether season 10 will be the end of Smallville, but that could quite possibly be because the ratings are increasing. It's hard to announce the end of a show when the ratings are still going up, but if they feel they are reaching the end of the stories they can tell with this particular characters, it could very well end up being the last year for the show. Smallville continues to be a success in DVD sales as well, so with all the money that the show is still capable of bringing in to CW, it just makes sense to keep it around for at least one more year. Details on when the 10th season premiere of Smallville will air should come out later this spring.
